An expedition to some of the least explored parts of the Indian Ocean has identified 149 species never before recorded by science. The findings highlight how much of the planet’s deep ocean remains unknown, even in regions that cover vast areas of the seafloor. Researchers focused on volcanic underwater mountains near the remote Christmas and Cocos islands, southwest of Indonesia. ([1])
A Longstanding Gap in Ocean Knowledge
The Indian Ocean spans roughly one-fifth of the world’s ocean area, yet its deeper waters have received far less attention than those of the Pacific or Atlantic. Most of this basin lies below 1,000 meters, where conditions are cold, dark, and difficult to reach. Until recently, no detailed surveys had examined the seamounts in the central eastern section. These underwater mountains rise from the abyssal plain and create distinct habitats. The expedition mapped sites ranging from 94 meters to more than 5,400 meters deep. Many of the features are between 40 and 120 million years old and can stretch up to 70 kilometers across. Lead researcher Tim O’Hara noted that shallow waters around the islands had been visited before, but the deep seafloor had never been studied.
Unexpected Finds in the Abyss
The team collected specimens across dozens of previously unexamined seamounts. Among the new species were a sea cucumber from the genus Oneirophanta, a fish belonging to the greeneye family, and a parasitic barnacle from the genus Rhizolepas. Each represents a distinct addition to the known marine catalog. The discoveries emerged from systematic sampling that combined mapping, imaging, and physical collection. The work revealed a seafloor community adapted to extreme pressure and total darkness. Many of the animals appear specialized to the hard surfaces and currents created by the seamounts themselves.
Why These Mountains Matter
Seamounts act as stepping stones that can support higher biodiversity than the surrounding flat seabed. They influence local water flow and provide attachment points for organisms that would otherwise struggle on soft sediment. The new records underscore how these features contribute to overall ocean diversity. The study, published in June in Deep-Sea Research Part II, fills a clear data gap. It also shows that even well-traveled regions of the ocean can hold surprises when researchers reach greater depths. The islands lie between Australia and Sri Lanka, far from routine research routes, which explains why the area stayed unexamined for so long.
What Matters Now
The results point to the need for continued exploration of similar remote features worldwide. Further work could clarify how these species interact with their environment and whether they occur elsewhere. Conservation planning for deep-sea areas will benefit from such baseline information. The expedition required nearly a week of travel from Darwin just to reach the study sites. That logistical challenge illustrates why large portions of the ocean floor remain poorly documented. Additional surveys could reveal whether the pattern of high novelty seen here repeats on other Indian Ocean seamounts. The findings serve as a reminder that the deep ocean still holds substantial unknowns. Each new species adds to the picture of how life persists in one of Earth’s most inaccessible environments.
