Autumn begins on September 22, marking the start of another leaf-peeping season across the United States. Foliage timing varies sharply by elevation, latitude and weather patterns, with northern and higher-altitude areas often turning first. Travelers planning trips can use established prediction tools to narrow their windows, though no forecast is certain. ([1])

Northeast Outlook

Mountainous sections of New England typically reach peak color by late September into early October. Popular spots such as Stowe in Vermont, the Berkshires in Massachusetts and Acadia National Park in Maine draw visitors during these weeks. Lower elevations, including parts of the Hudson Valley and coastal Maine, usually follow a week or two later. Unexpected conditions can shift these dates, as seen in recent years when drought accelerated leaf drop in Vermont and warm spells delayed color in Pennsylvania. State agencies in Maine and the Poconos have already begun issuing 2026 foliage reports to help travelers adjust plans. Checking local updates remains the most reliable way to time a visit.

Western Shifts

Colorado’s aspen groves are changing earlier than average this year because of ongoing drought conditions. Northern areas of the state are expected to peak in mid-September, with color moving south in the weeks that follow. Destinations near Denver, such as Guanella Pass and Golden Gate Canyon State Park, offer convenient access without traveling all the way to Aspen. Utah’s canyon maples and scrub oaks generally reach their best display in early to mid-October, when the light on red rock formations adds extra contrast. On the West Coast, Portland’s foliage is forecast to hit its stride in mid- to late October, making drives along the Columbia River Highway or river excursions timely options.

Midwest and Mid-Atlantic Windows

Michigan benefits from the moderating influence of the Great Lakes, producing an extended season. Northern sections are already showing color, with peak conditions expected in early October before the display moves south through late October. The Tunnel of Trees scenic route has reopened in stages after earlier flooding. Virginia’s varied terrain supports a long season that begins in earnest by the end of September. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina offer staggered peaks, starting in early October at higher elevations and reaching the coast by early November. Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks and Kentucky’s river corridors provide additional options through early November.

Southern Extensions

Farther south, foliage arrives later and often with fewer crowds. Louisiana state parks and Arkansas destinations such as Eureka Springs typically deliver strong color from late October into mid-November. Texas sites including Lost Maples State Natural Area and Garner State Park follow a similar schedule, with bigtooth maples and mixed hardwoods providing the main displays. South Carolina’s Congaree National Park and surrounding areas near Columbia are expected to peak in late October and early November. These later windows give travelers extra time to finalize plans while still enjoying vibrant autumn scenery.

Planning Considerations

Prediction resources such as the Old Farmer’s Almanac and regional foliage maps help narrow travel dates, though they rely on historical patterns and current conditions. An Old Farmer’s Almanac representative noted that past results offer a useful guide even if they cannot guarantee this year’s exact timing. – Monitor state forestry reports for weekly updates once the season begins. – Book flexible flights and lodging to accommodate weather-related shifts. – Consider shoulder periods at popular sites to reduce crowds while still catching good color. Weather remains the largest variable, so flexibility improves the odds of aligning a trip with peak conditions. With many strong options spread across the country, domestic leaf-peeping trips can deliver memorable autumn experiences without extensive travel.
