The Middle Eastern country is incredibly safe to drive around, the people are particularly friendly (even in the markets, sellers were the least aggressive I have seen just about anywhere), and within a few hours drive the country has everything from tropical blue water to gorges, endless orange sand dunes, historic villages, and epic mountain peaks. Oman offers a beautiful contrast to its neighbors in the Middle East. With its stunning fjords, dramatic mountains, and ancient forts, it’s a safe and welcoming country that provides a deep dive into Arabian culture without the ostentatious glitz.

International security experts consistently rate Oman among the safest countries in the region. The sultanate maintains strict neutrality in regional conflicts while investing heavily in tourism infrastructure. Visitors can explore traditional souks without experiencing aggressive vendors, a stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations.

I went on a two-week train journey through Bulgaria in 2024 and found it delightfully charming and underexplored. Despite visiting in the July summer high season, there was little evidence of this outside of the Black Sea coast at all, often having epic sights almost all to myself. Bulgaria’s crime statistics place it well within safe travel parameters, with most incidents involving petty theft in major cities.

At the crossroads of history, Bulgaria has numerous fascinating remnants of the Roman, Ottoman, and Bulgarian empires to see, including some of the most impressive ancient forts I’ve seen in Eastern Europe. There’s also plenty of gorgeous nature to enjoy, with some fantastic mountain hiking trails and mindblowing caves to explore. The country’s affordability and authentic experiences make safety concerns seem overblown compared to actual statistics.

Unknown to many, Cape Verde is a wonderland of hiking trails (especially the island of Santo Antao), volcanic landscapes, reefs teeming with life, cities with music-filled streets, and positive vibes. This Atlantic archipelago maintains remarkably low crime rates despite its developing nation status. Tourist-focused crimes remain minimal outside of occasional pickpocketing in urban areas.

I loved my time here and would go back in a heartbeat. It’s an incredible island-hopping destination during winter, with sun and balmy temperatures when the northern parts of the globe are grey. Cape Verde’s isolation works in its favor, creating tight-knit communities where visitors are welcomed and protected by local customs.
