Turning 70 doesn’t automatically lock you out of the rental counter. Still, the paperwork, pricing and fine print can shift depending on where you rent and who you rent from. That matters for a lot of people. The Federal Highway Administration counted roughly 51 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older in 2022, nearly 22 percent of all drivers.[1]

The picture isn’t uniform, and some online guides contradict each other. This article sticks to what rental companies and reasonably current guides actually say. Treat every number below as a snapshot, and confirm the details with your supplier before you book.

Many drivers assume the law stops them at a certain age. One senior car hire guide says no law in the UK, EU, USA, Australia or most other countries makes it illegal to hire a car to a driver over 70. A company that declines is applying its own commercial policy.[2] So when a rule appears, it usually comes from the rental company or its insurer, not from the government.

In the United States the situation is friendly. A Smarter Travel reader answer reported that Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National and Payless had no company-wide upper age limit, though individual franchise owners may set their own.[3] Sixt says the same about its U.S. branches: no upper age limit, special conditions or extra fees for drivers over 70.[4]

Abroad, the picture changes. Age limits vary between agencies and countries, but they often fall between 70 and 80.[5] Sixt also notes that parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia have restrictions or surcharges for senior drivers.[4] Malta is one example from AutoSlash: Avis sets a limit of 70 for luxury cars and 75 for other classes, and drivers over 75 must contact the company in advance, provide a doctor’s letter and buy several insurance coverages.[5]

Croatia shows how mixed the evidence can be. Auto Europe’s age chart lists 70 as the maximum age there.[6] Yet another Croatia guide says most providers accept drivers up to 90, with options becoming very limited above 80.[7] The lesson is simple. Don’t trust a single chart, and check the supplier you’re actually booking with.

A daily fee is the most common change. In Croatia, Hertz applies a senior driver’s surcharge to drivers 71 or older, at €12 per rental day with a €180 maximum.[8] Sixt lists a Croatian surcharge of €12 per day, capped at €60, for drivers above 70.[4] Notice that the caps differ, so the same age can cost different amounts depending on the brand.

Not every offer carries a fee. One Croatia guide says about half of offers for drivers aged 70 to 74 include a surcharge, typically around €5 to €25 a day where one applies.[7] Also watch how it’s collected. Auto Europe explains that age-related fees are not included in the prepaid rate and must be paid locally at the rental desk.[6] That can make the pickup total higher than the booking confirmation.

In several European markets, 75 is where the documents start. For Ireland, one 2026 guide says Sixt requires drivers over 75 to present a printed medical certificate dated within three months of pickup. Its January 2026 terms say the rental cannot proceed without it, and prepaid deposits or fees are forfeited.[9] That’s a harsh outcome after a long flight.

Requirements differ by company. Budget asks customers aged 76 and over to drive regularly, show motor-insurance and five-year accident-free evidence, and supply a doctor’s letter. It may also require an accompanied driving assessment.[9] An older Ireland community thread also stressed that the information had to arrive at least five working days before the rental.[10] Deadlines may have changed since then, so ask early and don’t leave this for the counter.

Age can affect what you pay if something goes wrong, not only the daily rate. The same Ireland guide summarizes the over-75 situation as a medical declaration, a €3,000 excess and insurance exclusion risks.[9] In Malta, the Avis requirement for several insurance coverages mentioned earlier works the same way. It raises the total cost of the rental.

Your own coverage deserves a second look too. One travel roundup reports that some card issuers exclude rental coverage once a cardholder passes a certain birthday, often 70 or 75.[11] I’d treat that as a prompt to read your card’s benefits guide, not as a rule for every card. It’s also sensible to make sure your travel insurance covers auto liability if local insurance might be finicky.[12]

Even within one country, suppliers disagree. In Ireland, Europcar’s Republic of Ireland FAQ says there is no maximum age, though it still requires a full licence held for two years.[9] By contrast, Avis and Budget require extra documents for older drivers, and Sixt needs a recent medical certificate after 75.[9] The same guide warns that the wording matters. Sixt says “over 75,” Budget says “76 and over,” and Avis says “over 76.”[9]

Other countries look gentler. One senior hire guide calls Portugal very relaxed on upper age limits[2] and describes Italy as one of the most relaxed countries in Europe for senior drivers, with many suppliers renting freely to age 80 and above.[2] That same guide notes that smaller local suppliers may impose a 70 or 75 age ceiling.[2] So the brand name on the website doesn’t tell the whole story.
