8 Countries Consistently Ranked Among the Safest for Women Traveling Alone

Solo female travel has grown into one of the most visible shifts in modern tourism, with more women choosing to book flights, hostels, and hiking trails without a travel partner in tow. That shift has also pushed safety data into sharper focus, since the countries that keep showing up on peace indexes and gender security reports tend to be the ones travelers gravitate toward first.

What follows isn’t a ranking based on vibes or influencer recommendations. It draws on established measures like the Global Peace Index and the Women, Peace and Security Index, cross checked against how these places actually function for someone walking around a foreign city on her own.

1. Iceland

Every year there are shifts in the ranking, but one thing has remained constant since 2008: Iceland is the safest place in the world. That consistency matters more than any single year’s score, because it points to structural stability rather than a lucky twelve months. Iceland has no military and very low violent crime.

What tends to surprise first time visitors isn’t just the crime statistics but the everyday texture of the place. Women often say it’s the first place they’ve walked alone after dark without a knot in their stomach. Reykjavik’s compact size, reliable lighting, and small population all play into that sense of ease, and the country’s legal framework around gender equality reinforces it rather than just decorating a brochure.

2. Denmark

Denmark’s reputation for safety isn’t new, but its performance on gender specific security metrics has kept it near the very top of relevant lists. Denmark scored highest overall, with strong performance in women’s employment, financial inclusion, absence of legal discrimination, and community safety. On the broader peace rankings it still sits comfortably near the top ten, even after a recent dip tied to military spending categories rather than street level crime. A safe country to travel and live in, Denmark is characterized by a high degree of political stability, freedom of the press and respect for human rights.

The lived experience backs up the statistics in a fairly straightforward way. In Copenhagen and Aarhus, biking culture and frequent metros make solo nights feel routine, not risky. Bike lanes stretch through nearly every neighborhood, public transport runs late, and the general social contract around personal space tends to work in a solo traveler’s favor rather than against it.

3. Norway

Norway rarely makes headlines for safety because it simply doesn’t produce the kind of incidents that generate headlines. It sits among the group of Nordic nations that consistently occupy the upper tier of both the Global Peace Index and gender focused security measures, and Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland rank among the top five on the Women, Peace, and Security Index, which measures women’s inclusion, justice, and security across 181 countries. The country’s wealth and social welfare system reduce the kind of desperation driven crime that affects solo travelers elsewhere.

Beyond the numbers, Norway offers something practical: predictability. Fjord towns and Oslo alike run on a rhythm where public transport is reliable and strangers tend to mind their own business without being cold about it. For a woman navigating unfamiliar terrain alone, that combination of low crime and low social friction removes a surprising amount of daily stress.

4. Finland

Finland often gets grouped with its Nordic neighbors, and for good reason, since the underlying data tells a similar story. The Nordic countries of Europe, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland, rank among the 25 safest globally, most of them also being among the top 10 happiest nations worldwide. Helsinki in particular has built a reputation for calm, well organized public spaces where solo visitors rarely encounter the low level harassment common in many other capitals.

What sets Finland apart slightly is its outdoor accessibility. Solo hikers and campers can move through vast stretches of forest and lake country with a reasonable expectation of both physical safety and, in most areas, decent mobile coverage for emergencies. That mix of urban calm and manageable wilderness gives Finland a broader appeal than a strictly city based safety ranking might suggest.

5. New Zealand

New Zealand has built its reputation on more than scenery, though the scenery certainly helps sell the trip. Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria and Switzerland are the top 5 most peaceful countries in the world in 2025. That ranking reflects low crime, political stability, and a general social trust that solo travelers notice almost immediately upon arrival.

The country’s infrastructure for independent travelers is genuinely strong. You’ll find hostels full of other solo women and well run tour networks. The one caveat worth repeating involves geography rather than crime, since rural roads are remote, so it pays to plan fuel and daylight if you’re driving alone. That’s a logistics note more than a safety warning, but it’s a practical one for anyone renting a car outside the main cities.

6. Switzerland

Switzerland’s safety credentials are almost boringly consistent, which in this context is a compliment. It regularly appears among the top five on the Global Peace Index, and its low crime environment extends across both cities and the smaller alpine towns that draw hikers and skiers. The country’s public transport system, often cited as one of the most efficient in the world, adds a practical layer of safety since it reduces the need for late night walks or reliance on unfamiliar taxis.

Zurich and Geneva both carry reputations as walkable, well lit cities where solo women can move around comfortably during the day and, generally, after dark as well. Zurich consistently ranks as one of the safest European cities for women based on WPS Index country scores and traveler perception surveys. The trade off is cost, since Switzerland remains one of the more expensive countries on this list, but that expense buys a level of predictability many travelers find worth the price.

7. Japan

Japan stands out on this list partly because it breaks the Western European pattern that dominates most safety rankings. Japan blends big city energy with rare calm, and it sits at number 12 on the Global Peace Index 2025 and is famous for low crime. Solo female travelers frequently cite it as the Asian destination where they feel most comfortable navigating alone, day or night.

The details tend to reinforce that reputation rather than complicate it. You can ride the last train, grab ramen at midnight, and feel fine, and forgotten phones often come back. That last point isn’t a throwaway anecdote. It reflects a broader social norm around honesty and low opportunistic theft that shapes how safe a solo traveler feels carrying a bag, a phone, or cash through unfamiliar streets.

8. Portugal

Portugal has become something of a favorite among budget conscious solo travelers who still want strong safety credentials. Portugal is the budget star of safe Europe, ranking high on the Global Peace Index and pairing low crime with friendly culture. It regularly lands in the global top ten on the peace index, a rare achievement for a country with a relatively lower cost of living than its Western European neighbors.

That said, Portugal’s safety profile comes with one honest caveat that most guides mention. Petty theft exists in tourist zones, so keep your bag zipped. It’s a minor note compared to the violent crime concerns that shape travel decisions elsewhere, but it’s worth knowing before wandering through crowded areas of Lisbon or Porto with a phone in an open pocket.

None of these eight countries are risk free, because no place fully is. What sets them apart is a track record built on multiple independent measures, from the Global Peace Index to gender specific security data, rather than a single good year or a marketing campaign. For a woman planning a solo trip in 2026, that kind of consistency across different data sources is a far more reliable signal than any one ranking taken alone.
