American Express is moving forward with several significant upgrades to its Centurion Lounge network at key U.S. airports. The most prominent change involves a much larger facility at Newark Liberty International Airport that will surpass all existing locations in the network. These developments come as card issuers continue to invest in premium travel amenities amid growing demand from frequent flyers. ([1])
Newark Facility to Become the Network Leader
The planned Newark lounge stands out because of its scale. Originally announced at roughly 18,000 square feet, the project has grown to more than 30,000 square feet across two floors in Terminal A. That size will make it the largest Centurion Lounge when it opens in 2027, exceeding the current record holder in Atlanta. The expanded design includes three distinct bar experiences. A main bar will offer craft cocktails and curated wines, while a specialty bar draws on New Jersey diner culture. A terrace bar will highlight Italian heritage with gelato, pastries and cocktails. A Blue Roast coffee and wellness bar will provide espresso, cold brew, smoothies and light bites. Multiple dining options from chefs including Kwame Onwuachi, Mike Solomonov, Mashama Bailey and Sarah Grueneberg are also planned.
Houston Expansion Nearly Triples Current Space
Travelers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston will see substantial growth at the existing Centurion Lounge. The facility, currently about 8,000 square feet, will expand to more than 23,000 square feet. Completion is expected in 2028, positioning Houston among the larger lounges in the network. The added space will introduce a second full-service bar, additional seating, showers and restrooms. A Blue Roast coffee and wellness bar will be included, along with a specialty dining concept inspired by local cuisine. These changes address capacity needs at one of the busier airports in the system.
Philadelphia Lounge to Double in Size After Renovation
The Centurion Lounge at Philadelphia International Airport, which opened in 2017, will undergo a major renovation. The current space will close temporarily on October 16, 2026, with reopening scheduled by the end of 2027. The updated facility will span 12,000 square feet across two stories. Design elements will reflect Philadelphia’s history, energy and craftsmanship, incorporating work from local artists. The expansion aims to improve flow and amenities for passengers using the airport regularly.
Access Rules and Network Context
Entry to Centurion Lounges requires a same-day boarding pass. Cardmembers may enter up to three hours before a departing flight or five hours before a connecting flight. Complimentary access is available to holders of the American Express Platinum Card, Business Platinum Card, Corporate Platinum Card and Centurion Card, as well as certain Delta Reserve cards when flying Delta-marketed or operated flights booked with a U.S.-issued American Express card. These U.S. projects build on earlier network growth that includes a new lounge in Boston expected in 2029 and expansions at other airports. American Express has also opened locations in Amsterdam and introduced the Sidecar concept in Las Vegas. The investments reflect ongoing competition among premium card issuers to provide reliable lounge access, though peak-period crowding remains a noted challenge for travelers. The updates signal a measured response to rising demand while extending the timeline for some facilities to ensure larger, more functional spaces upon completion.
