The 10 Best Countries for Expats According to a New Survey

An impressive 82% of expats in Panama are satisfied with their lives, and Indonesia saw a dramatic rise to 3rd place from 13th the previous year, thanks to improved working conditions. That’s all according to InterNations’ Expat Insider survey, which cited that certain countries make settling in far easier than others for expats.

People often say the grass is greener on the other side, and moving to live and work in a different country can be an excellent opportunity to start anew. However, it can also be overwhelming, with challenges like finding a new job and moving into a new home.

Fortunately, some countries worldwide make moving out and settling down easier than others. InterNations recently released a report highlighting the best countries for living abroad based on factors like quality of life, personal finance, ease of settling in, and expat essentials.

Panama

Panama tops the list as the best country for living abroad in 2024, moving up from 3rd place in 2023. The InterNations survey finds that 82% of expats in Panama are happy with their lives, which is well above the national average of 68%.

Expats in Panama can find apartments starting at $712 per month and enjoy reliable healthcare systems. Financial stability is another strong point; nearly 74% of expats are happy with their financial situation, while 88% believe their disposable income is more than enough to lead a comfortable life.

Mexico ranks 2nd this year, slipping from its previous top spot in 2023. Despite the drop, it remains a favorite among expats, with nearly 89% stating they are happy with their life there.

One of Mexico’s major draws is its low cost of living; single-room apartments are available for $300 to $700 a month, depending on the location. The country also has a friendly population, with 86% of respondents praising the general friendliness of the locals. Job market improvements have pushed Mexico to 8th place in the Working Abroad Index.

Indonesia

Indonesia climbed an impressive ten places from its 13th rank in 2023 to 3rd in 2024. The country stands out for its job satisfaction, taking the top spot in overall career satisfaction among expats. Working hours in Indonesia average 38.8 hours per week, significantly lower than the global average of 42.5 hours.

Financial comfort is another major plus; 86% of expats believe their disposable income is sufficient to live comfortably, thanks to Indonesia’s low living costs and affordable housing options.

Spain

Spain remains a favorite for expats, securing 4th place after ranking 2nd in 2023. The country’s low crime rate, quality healthcare, and affordable rental prices — ranging from $600 to $1,200 per month — make it an attractive destination.

Its excellent public transportation and leisure options add to the quality of life, contributing to its high rankings.

Colombia

Colombia’s rise from 17th in 2023 to 5th in 2024 shows how much the country has improved in terms of safety, cost of living, and accessibility. A major draw for expats is affordable housing, with single-room apartments available for as low as $270 to $670 per month.

Around 62% of expats in Colombia are satisfied with their financial situation, highlighting the country’s appeal to those seeking a more affordable lifestyle.

Thailand

Retaining its spot from 2023, Thailand is the 6th best country for living abroad. Its friendly communities, low cost of living, and relatively high salaries make it a go-to choice for expats.

With beautiful landscapes and affordable healthcare, Thailand offers a well-rounded experience for those moving abroad.

Brazil

Brazil makes an impressive jump from 15th place in 2023 to 7th in 2024. The growing expat communities, coupled with affordable rental costs starting at $400 to $600 per month, have made it a top choice. Brazil’s warm climate and rich culture are also critical factors in its growing popularity among expats.

Vietnam

Vietnam’s rise from 14th in 2023 to 8th this year is thanks to its improved living standards and lower cost of living. It is an appealing destination for expats, and the rent ranges from $170 to $400 monthly.

Vietnam also excels in personal finance, ranking 1st in this category, with many expats feeling their disposable income is more than enough for a comfortable life.

Philippines

Slipping from 8th place in 2023 to 9th in 2024, the Philippines remains a top contender for expats. A major advantage is the widespread use of English, making communication easier for newcomers. The cost of living is relatively low, with apartments in the city available for $200 to $800 a month, depending on the location.

United Arab Emirates

Jumping from 11th in 2023, the United Arab Emirates has become increasingly popular among expats due to its safety, quality education, and lack of income tax. Expats praise its efficient public transportation and healthcare systems, making the UAE a desirable place to work and live abroad.
