British Airways has detailed a comprehensive refresh of its Airbus A380 aircraft, with new seating across first class, business class, premium economy and economy. The changes also include major lounge investments at London Heathrow. The updates build on an earlier announcement of new first-class suites and now extend to every passenger cabin on the superjumbo. Largest Business-Class Cabin Takes Shape
The retrofitted A380 will carry 106 business-class seats, a figure the airline says will make it the largest such cabin on any aircraft. These seats represent an evolution of the existing Club Suite product already flying on other British Airways widebodies. They will sit in a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone layout with closing doors, direct aisle access and expanded storage. The business-class seats will occupy the entire upper deck and will be divided into four distinct mini-cabins. Each mini-cabin includes dedicated areas near the galleys where passengers can spend time away from their seats. British Airways said the design incorporates customer feedback on storage, functionality and overall comfort.
First-Class Suite Details Emerge
At the front of the lower deck, the new first-class cabin will feature 12 seats arranged in three rows of a 1-2-1 configuration. Each suite will be wider than current first-class seats and will include an ottoman, a stowable table and a 32-inch 4K entertainment screen. Center pairs of seats can open a divider to create a shared space for dining together. A small minibar stocked with snacks and water will sit in every suite. New amenity kits containing Wildsmith skincare items and a Circadian Rhythm collection are already rolling out across the airline’s first-class cabins. Updated bedding includes a woven day blanket, mattress topper, lightweight duvet and new pillow, while a revised “From the Grill” dining concept lets passengers build meals from separate mains, sides and proteins.
Premium Economy and Economy Receive Targeted Improvements
On the lower deck, premium economy will gain new seats with privacy wings, larger seatback screens and upgraded bedding. Passengers in this cabin will also receive reusable amenity kits containing a moisturizer, dental kit and eye mask. Economy seats will be wider within the existing 3-4-3 layout and will feature larger entertainment screens along with higher-quality pillows and blankets. These changes aim to improve comfort and the overall onboard experience without altering the fundamental cabin layouts. British Airways has not released exact seat counts for premium economy or economy on the refreshed aircraft.
New and Redesigned Lounges at Heathrow
Alongside the aircraft work, British Airways plans a new lounge at the Terminal 5 C gates. The facility is scheduled to open by the end of 2028 and will include a 17-meter bar, showers, relaxation areas and panoramic views of the airfield. A dedicated Concorde lounge section will serve first-class passengers. The airline is also redesigning its arrivals lounge with a coffee bar, deli, larger dining areas, 59 shower rooms and premium shower suites. First-class passengers will have access to private cabanas and curated interiors. A new first-class check-in area at Terminal 3 will open in partnership with American Airlines.
Timeline and Broader Impact
The airline stated that the new seats will enter service in the coming months, though it remains unclear whether any aircraft will operate before the end of 2026. Lounge construction projects are already underway at Boston and Newark, with work at San Francisco and Geneva expected to begin next year. These investments form part of a multi-billion-dollar effort to modernize the customer experience on British Airways’ flagship routes. Passengers on long-haul flights from Heathrow will eventually see consistent improvements from check-in through arrival.
