Traveling on a budget doesn’t mean you have to skimp on adventure and excitement, especially if you plan on just staying within the United States. From national parks and national monuments to vibrant cities, there is plenty to see, no matter what state you decide to visit.
You can see beaches, forests, mountains, and almost any type of topical geography you can think of. From coast to coast, here are 17 of my favorite affordable places to visit in the U.S. this year!
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque is a mosaic of Native American and Hispanic cultures, evident in its festivals, architecture, and museums. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a visually spectacular event that is surprisingly affordable. You can also explore the historic Old Town, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and take scenic hikes in the nearby Sandia Mountains.
For those interested in art and history, the city offers numerous museums with low admission fees. Nearby Sante Fe is a bit pricier, but it’s another great day trip destination for window shopping or for those interested in spiritual healing offerings, which are abundant in this region.
Memphis, Tennessee
Skip Nashville and venture to Memphis, a city steeped in musical history, known as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll and the home of the blues. Here, you can explore the legendary Sun Studio, where icons like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash recorded their hits, for a small fee.
The city also offers free musical performances on Beale Street, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music provides a comprehensive look at the genre for a modest price. The revitalized downtown area, with its affordable dining options, makes Memphis a culturally rich destination that’s easy on the wallet.
Daytona Beach, Florida
One of the top beaches in Florida that’s also happens to be known for its motorsports, Daytona Beach is more than just a haven for racing fans. The beach itself is famous for its hard-packed sands that allow for driving, with beach access costing only a small fee. Cultural sites such as the Museum of Arts and Sciences and the historic Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse provide affordable educational experiences.
For a break from the beach, the Daytona Beach Boardwalk features free concerts and fireworks displays during the summer. Accommodations can be a bit pricy during peak season, but if you book far enough in advance, you should be able to find something great within your budget here.
Salt Lake City, Utah
Salt Lake City serves as a gateway to Utah’s renowned ski resorts and national parks, which are accessible with an affordable day’s drive. The city itself is home to the historic Temple Square, which offers free tours of its stunning gardens and facilities. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Natural History Museum of Utah also provide low-cost educational outings.
For outdoor enthusiasts, this is a perfect and affordable launching point for visiting Park City, Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, or any of the many other nearby mountains during the winter season without shoveling out hundreds for slopeside accommodations. In the summer months, it’s also a great launching point for nearby adventures like the salt flats or venturing further south to Moab and nearby national parks.
The greatest advantage to Salt Lake City is it’s airport, which is easily accessible and has many affordable flights from cities all over the country making it a great central location for a group trip.
Asheville, North Carolina
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is a haven for artists and outdoor enthusiasts. The city’s downtown art district features galleries and murals that can be enjoyed for free, and the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway offers countless hiking trails with breathtaking views.
Asheville is also known for its craft beer scene, with many breweries offering affordable tastings. The historic Biltmore Estate, while pricier, offers discounted tickets if purchased in advance.
Boulder, Colorado
Located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder is a top destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts. The city is surrounded by over 150 miles of hiking trails that are free to explore and suitable for all skill levels. The vibrant Pearl Street Mall is perfect for people-watching and hosts street performers and affordable eateries.
The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, a gift from sister city Dushanbe, Tajikistan, is one of my favorite restaurants here and offers a budget-friendly menu in a beautifully handcrafted setting. For an even more budget-friendly trip, consider camping a few nights nearby or even for the entirety of your trip here!
Tucson, Arizona
Skip the bustle of Phoenix and opt for Tucson, a culturally rich city set against a backdrop of deserts and mountain ranges. It offers a variety of inexpensive yet enriching activities such as visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which is part zoo, botanical garden, and art gallery.
The historic missions and the vibrant Mercado San Agustin are perfect for exploring without spending much. The city’s proximity to Arizona’s famous Saguaro National Park also allows for budget-friendly outdoor adventures. Accommodations here are usually pretty affordable, so the biggest cost will likely be the airfare unless you are on the West Coast and can drive out.
Reno, Nevada
Reno is a cost-effective alternative to Las Vegas, offering a similar, albeit smaller-scale, casino experience. The city’s location near Lake Tahoe also provides access to natural beauty and outdoor activities at a fraction of the cost of staying on the lake.
Flights here are usually pretty reasonable as well, making it a great launching place for a ski trip or bachelor trip. For a quieter experience, Reno’s thriving arts scene is also booming, highlighted by the Nevada Museum of Art which is worth a visit.
Kansas City, Missouri
As someone who has primarily lived on the coasts, I will admit I was skeptical about Kansas City at first. After a close friend moved here, I was able to get to know it first hand, however, and found this to be an amazing place to not only live but visit as well. It’s renowned for its jazz heritage and culinary scene, notably its barbecue. You can enjoy free jazz performances at the American Jazz Museum’s Blue Room and sample some of the country’s best barbecue at reasonable prices.
The city’s many museums, like the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, offer free admission, providing cultural experiences that are accessible to all. If you have time, extend the trip and venture out to the Ozarks after for a gorgeous escape from the city. Aside from the Chiefs (sorry I remain a Patriots fan) this is well worth a visit and easy to do on a budget.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Known as the “Beer City USA,” Grand Rapids has an impressive array of breweries that often offer free tours and tastings. The city also boasts the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, which combines art and nature for a modest entry fee.
The Grand Rapids Art Museum has free admission days and offers a budget-friendly cultural experience.
Boise, Idaho
Boise stands out with its vibrant arts scene, bustling downtown, and easy access to outdoor activities. The Boise River Greenbelt offers miles of trails ideal for biking and walking at no cost. The city’s cultural events, like the Idaho Potato Drop on New Year’s Eve, are free and family-friendly.
If you have the time, take a day trip to nearby Ketchum and explore the quaint town, or check out Sun Valley in the winter (although it is a pricier venture).
Burlington, Vermont
Known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant community, Burlington offers year-round outdoor activities. The city’s waterfront on Lake Champlain is perfect for picnicking and watching sunsets, and Church Street Marketplace provides a lively scene with street performers and local artisans.
Fall can be a bit pricier due to the stunning foliage that draws people from all over, but if you book in advance you can find a great affordable accommodation and see the gorgeous leaves turn for yourself.
Anchorage, Alaska
While Alaska can be an expensive destination due to its remoteness, Anchorage itself offers numerous affordable attractions. If you can find an affordable flight, jump at the chance and make your way to this amazing region. Enjoy the stunning natural beauty surrounding the city, like Flattop Mountain, which provides free hiking opportunities with panoramic views.
The Anchorage Market & Festival is another budget-friendly option, showcasing local arts, crafts, and foods. Anchorage is also a great, affordable launching point for outdoor enthusiasts who want to access the nearby Denali National Park or explore Seward and the glacial regions further south.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
This small coastal city offers a rich history with affordable attractions and a much cheaper alternative to nearby Boston or Portland. Portsmouth’s Strawbery Banke Museum provides a look into the area’s past with reasonable admission fees, and you can enjoy walking along the historic houses.
The city also hosts free or inexpensive seasonal festivals that highlight its maritime heritage. There are dozens of cute shops and cafes, making it a great place to walk around and window shop while enjoying the views. In the summer months, you can also enjoy nearby beaches or take out a kayak to explore the coast further.
Newport, Rhode Island
Another charming East Coast town, Newport is a stunning town that is perfect for a day trip. While Newport is known for its grand mansions, you can stay nearby in affordable accommodations and visit the area for a day to enjoy the scenery and shops.
Many of its beaches and scenic ocean walks are free. Additionally, the city often hosts affordable or free cultural events, from jazz festivals to gallery nights.
Idyllwild, California
Often overlooked by Big Bear and Mammoth, this charming mountain town in Southern California is a slice of paradise that offers an escape for a budget. Accommodations are fairly affordable, especially if you have a large group and can secure a quaint cabin.
The small town is fun to walk around, with many affordable diners and cafes, as well as small shops and thrift stores. There are tons of great hikes in the area, and you can also take a tram down to Palm Springs from the top of nearby San Jacinto Peak. It’s one of my favorite getaways from Los Angeles.
Ventura, California
Another Southern California special, Ventura is a laid-back beach town with affordable activities and accommodations. Just north of Los Angeles and down the coast from Santa Barbara, you can explore the historic Ventura Pier and Promenade for free, enjoy the local beaches, and visit the Ventura Botanical Gardens with a very modest admission fee.
The city also offers easy access to the Channel Islands National Park, which is perfect for a day trip of hiking and wildlife watching for a pretty reasonable price. It’s a great launching point for the entire southern coast, with more affordable accommodations or camping but within driving distance of many other great areas.
I drive here often from Los Angeles and could easily spend a week just enjoying the town of Ventura itself.
