Delta Air Lines has confirmed plans to operate its first nonstop flights between the U.S. mainland and the Philippines. The new service will connect Los Angeles International Airport with Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport beginning March 28, 2027. This addition strengthens the carrier’s position at its growing West Coast hub while giving travelers a direct option to a key Southeast Asian destination that previously required connections.

Why the Route Matters for Travelers

The introduction of nonstop service removes the need for intermediate stops on journeys between Southern California and the Philippine capital. Passengers will gain several hours of travel time compared with existing one-stop itineraries, and the route opens easier access for business, family visits, and leisure travel. Delta executives have identified strong customer demand for direct links to destinations in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific that the airline has not previously served nonstop. The Manila flight fits into that pattern, following recent additions such as Los Angeles to Hong Kong and the upcoming Los Angeles to Melbourne service.

Details of the Planned Operation

Delta intends to operate the route with Airbus A350-900 aircraft configured for long-haul travel. Depending on the layout, these wide-body jets can accommodate up to 40 seats in the Delta One business-class cabin along with premium economy and standard economy sections. The carrier has also highlighted the recent opening of its second Delta One Lounge at Los Angeles International Airport as part of the infrastructure supporting expanded long-haul operations. Service frequency and exact departure times will be released closer to the launch date.

Delta’s Return to the Philippines

Although this marks the first nonstop mainland U.S. flight Delta has offered to Manila, the airline previously served the destination through fifth-freedom rights on routes from Seoul and Tokyo. Those operations ended during the pandemic and were not reinstated. The new Los Angeles flight represents a different approach, using the carrier’s own metal on a direct trans-Pacific path. Philippine Airlines already operates nonstop service on the same city pair, and United Airlines offers nonstop flights from its San Francisco hub, giving travelers additional choices on both U.S. and Philippine carriers.

Broader Network Growth at LAX

Los Angeles has become a focal point for Delta’s international expansion on the West Coast. In addition to the Hong Kong and Melbourne routes already announced, company leaders have pointed to transpacific flying as one of the airline’s primary growth areas in the years ahead. Vice president of network planning Jeff Arinder noted that the Manila addition builds on the premium travel experience customers expect from Delta while reinforcing the airline’s role as a leading global carrier at the airport. The move also aligns with efforts to serve high-demand markets that currently lack direct service. The announcement reflects measured expansion rather than rapid overreach. With the March 2027 start date still more than eight months away, Delta has time to finalize schedules, secure regulatory approvals, and prepare crews and aircraft for the long-haul operation. For travelers planning trips to the Philippines or onward connections through Manila, the new nonstop option will eventually provide a straightforward alternative to existing routings.
