Lake Bohinj itself, the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, is a sight to behold, with crystal-clear waters reflecting the majestic mountains. From late May until early to mid-June, Bohinj’s International Wild Flower Festival is open to anyone interested in nature and botany. The event celebrates Bohinj’s biodiversity, and there are many free workshops and tours suitable for families. For those interested in cultural experiences, the traditional alpine architecture of the small villages and the Church of St. John the Baptist provides a glimpse into the local heritage and tranquility that defines Bohinj.

But for those looking for a quieter escape, there are plenty of smaller towns, such as Moraira, along the coast where you can unwind and enjoy the local culture. Playa de Levante is one of the most popular beaches in Costa Blanca, known for its golden sand and variety of water sports.
Costa Blanca is also known for its delicious cuisine. There is no shortage of tasty dishes, from fresh seafood to traditional paella. Compared to other popular beach destinations in Europe, Costa Blanca offers an affordable destination for travelers on a budget.
Florence, Italy
Florence in June is a celebration of art, culture, and cuisine all under one roof: the Tuscan sun. This vibrant Renaissance city comes alive with festivals, open-air markets, and a buzz of friendly locals. June is a particularly magical time as the warm weather invites visitors to explore its cobbled streets, magnificent piazzas, and breathtaking landscapes at their leisure.
One of the biggest highlights of the Florence calendar is the Calcio Storico Fiorentino, an ancient game that’s part football, part rugby, and part historical reenactment. It takes place in the sand-covered Piazza Santa Croce. The final is always held at the end of June. It’s a unique blend of sport and tradition that you won’t find anywhere else, and it brings a massive buzz to the city.
Additionally, the Festa di San Giovanni on June 24th, celebrating the feast day of Florence’s patron saint, John the Baptist, culminates in spectacular fireworks over the Arno River. Art aficionados can take advantage of the extended hours of Florence’s world-renowned museums, like the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia. Offering more time to marvel at the masterpieces without the rush.
Florence in June also means savoring the fresh flavors of Italian summer cuisine in open-air trattorias. Dishes feature local touches thanks to truffles and zucchini blossoms. And remember the gelato, a creamy delight perfect for cooling off after a day of exploration. Gelato doesn’t get much better than in Italy.
Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt, Germany, shines in the summer with a vibrant atmosphere and many attractions to explore. The city is more than just a financial hub. It’s a friendly destination with links across Germany. This is why I have chosen it as a great summer destination. I lived in Frankfurt for almost a year, and the city has lots to do. There are always open-air events, stalls, lush green parks, and picturesque riverbanks to enjoy and explore in June.
Frankfurt Cathedral, also known as Kaiserdom, has excellent city views from the tower and along the river. It’s free to enter and offers guided tours if you want to learn more about the cathedral’s past. Next to the Cathedral is Romerberg Square, surrounded by traditional German-style buildings and one of the most recognized squares in Germany.
If you’re looking for a restaurant serving traditional German food with only locals in sight, I highly recommend Romer Pils Brunnen. I lived next door to this restaurant and spent most Sundays there enjoying the best German food I’ve ever had.
Just a short trip from Frankfurt, you’ll find some truly enchanting places perfect for day trips or short excursions. For those who love fairy tale castles, the Rhine Valley is a must-see, with plenty of boat tours to choose from. Another gem nearby is Heidelberg, famous for its picturesque old town and the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. Explore the Philosopher’s Walk for the best panoramic views of the city and Castle.
Ibiza, Spain
Ibiza is often recognized as the ultimate party destination but holds much more beneath its vibrant nightlife. Beyond the world-renowned clubs and DJs spinning the latest beats, Ibiza offers natural beauty and serene escapades. The island is a haven for beach lovers, with hidden coves and pristine shores like Cala Comte and Cala Bassa, offering crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.
But Ibiza’s allure doesn’t end at its beaches. The UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town has ancient streets lined with quaint cafes, galleries, and boutiques. You’ll also discover tunnels, military cannons, and incredible views of the Balearic Sea. Plus, with its numerous yoga retreats and organic eateries, the island’s commitment to wellness provides a perfect balance to its lively party scene and a top destination for those seeking a healthy retreat in June.
Ksamil, Albania
Albania may not be the first place that comes to mind for a summer vacation, but this relatively unheard-of destination in the Balkans is quickly gaining popularity. With its stunning beaches, picturesque mountains, and rich history, Albania offers an authentic and affordable Mediterranean experience.
Ksamil is ideal for families looking for a summer vacation, usually at a fraction of the cost of nearby Greek islands. Its southern coast is the gateway to the beautiful beaches of the Albanian Riviera and the archaeological site of Butrint. Its vibrant waterfront, crystal-clear waters, pristine white beaches, and proximity to Corfu make it an ideal destination.
But what makes Ksamil even more special is its proximity to three small islands, reachable by boat or even swimming for the adventurous. These secluded paradises offer an escape from the bustle of the crowds and a chance to immerse yourself in nature. The clear water is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and the islands are dotted with small beaches to relax and soak up the sun.
Mallorca, Spain
Mallorca comes to life in June with its warm Mediterranean climate, offering guests a vibrant and authentic taste of the Balearic Islands. From the stunning beaches of Cala Major and Es Trenc, offering golden sands and azure waters, to the charming streets of Palma, the island’s bustling capital, there’s no shortage of beauty to explore.
June is particularly special as the island celebrates various local festivals, giving visitors a glimpse into Mallorca’s rich heritage and lively traditions. Sant Joan, a midsummer festival celebrated on the 23rd of June, is one not to be missed. With fireworks, bonfires, traditional music, and dancing, it’s a spectacle that will give you a real taste of the Mallorcan spirit.
For nature enthusiasts, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains are a paradise for hiking. They offer breathtaking views and a serene escape from the beach’s hustle and bustle. For a unique experience, take a boat trip to the uninhabited island of Cabrera, home to an impressive marine reserve and stunning secluded beaches.
Santorini, Greece
Santorini is an iconic vacation destination and the most photographed Greek island. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure, Santorini delivers unmatched elegance and charm. The iconic Oia Village, with its distinctive white buildings and blue domes, offers the perfect backdrop for holiday snaps.
A visit to Santorini would be complete only if you witnessed the breathtaking sunset from the Skaros Rock in Imerovigli. For a taste of authentic Greek cuisine, visit one of the many tavernas scattered throughout the island. They offer delicious local dishes and stunning views. Those on the rock’s cliff are more popular and, of course, expensive, but you should try to dine here at least once during your visit.
For a deep dive into history, the ancient Akrotiri Archaeological Site reveals a sophisticated prehistoric city preserved in volcanic ash. One of my all-time favorite activities I’ve always made time for is sailing around the island on a traditional Greek boat. They stop at hidden coves and secluded beaches along the way. Try to pick a trip that stops at Red Beach, known for its striking and unusual colorful sands and crystal-clear waters.
Siena, Italy
Siena is one of the largest cities in the Tuscany region of Italy and one of the best places to experience the rolling hills of Tuscany. It’s the best time for a scenic drive through the countryside, dotted with sunflower fields and vineyards. And when the evening summer sun hits the hills, it’s an exquisite sight. For some of the best views of Siena and the countryside, climb the Torre del Mangia.
Piazza del Campo, one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares, is where the famous horse race Il Palio takes place twice a year (July and August). Surrounding the piazza are numerous cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a leisurely espresso while soaking in the historical atmosphere.
The Siena Cathedral is an absolute must-see for art lovers, with its stunning façade and richly decorated interior, including works by Michelangelo and Donatello. Lastly, no visit to Siena would be complete without exploring the local markets and shops. Here, you can pick up a variety of Tuscan goods, from fine wines and olive oils to handcrafted leather products, making it the perfect place to find a unique souvenir or gift.
Split, Croatia
Split is a beautiful part of Croatia thanks to its blend of stunning beaches, ancient architecture, and lively culture. The Diocletian’s Palace is UNESCO-listed and is a must-visit. While you’re there, don’t forget to visit the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals in the world. For a taste of local life, head to the Riva Promenade, where locals and tourists stroll along the waterfront.
Bacvice Beach is the most famous beach in Split, renowned for its soft sand, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant social scene. If you’re looking for a more serene environment, Kasjuni Beach is your go-to, with its sweeping views of the Adriatic and less crowded atmosphere. For those who love to explore, the hidden coves and pristine waters of Jadran Beach provide a perfect backdrop for snorkeling and discovering marine life.
For a taste of authentic local cuisine, head to the bustling food markets and try some freshly caught seafood or delicious Dalmatian prosciutto. As evening falls, be sure to see a performance at the outdoor theatre within the palace walls for a truly unforgettable experience. For travelers seeking nature and adventure, Marjan Hill is a must. It offers panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea, and it’s a perfect spot for hiking, cycling, or enjoying a picnic. Croatia as a country, also holds the bonus of being one of the cheaper European countries to visit.
Ticino, Switzerland
Ticino is not your typical Swiss experience. It dazzles with its Italian flair, combining the best of both worlds. It’s a region in the southern Swiss Alps, primarily Italian-speaking and practically neighbors to the better-known Lake Como. Its palm-lined lakes and mountains offer a stunning backdrop for hiking, while the charming towns echo the architecture and cuisine of Italy. It’s a unique blend of Swiss precision and Italian dolce vita.
With its warm weather and beautiful landscapes, outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in many activities in June. Imagine gliding over the crystal-clear waters of Lake Lugano or Lake Maggiore on a stand-up paddleboard or gliding along in a kayak. For those who prefer adventures on land, the region’s lush trails invite hikers and bikers to explore the natural beauty, with routes varying from easy walks along the lake shores to challenging mountain trails offering breathtaking views.
But that’s not all Ticino has to offer. During summer, the region comes alive with vibrant festivals that showcase local music, art, and cuisine. The castles of Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offer a fascinating glimpse into the past with well-preserved medieval architecture that transports visitors back in time.
Vienna, Austria
In June, the city bursts into life, its streets lined with blossoming flowers, and the warm weather invites everyone outdoors. Vienna is known for its imperial history, majestic palaces, and vibrant music scene. Start your visit by experiencing the city’s cafe culture and sipping a traditional Viennese coffee with the locals while watching the world go by.
Remember to make your way to the charming center of Vienna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the breathtaking St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The Schonbrunn Palace, with its stunning gardens, is a must-visit. In the summer, you might catch a classical concert in the Orangery. The Belvedere Museum showcases an impressive collection for art lovers, including Gustav Klimt’s famous “The Kiss.”
Vienna is also home to numerous outdoor events and music festivals in June, reflecting
the city’s love for culture and the arts. Donauinselfest is one of Europe’s largest open-air music festivals, attracting over three million visitors every year. It takes place in Vienna on one of the last weekends in June and is free. If you’re seeking a city break with a huge party, Vienna could be the destination for you.
Zante, Greece
Zante, or Zakynthos as it’s officially known, is my favorite Greek island. Sure, it has a reputation for being a party island, and in towns like Laganas, you can dance until dawn. But just like Ibiza, there’s much more to this destination than clubbing. It boasts stunning natural beauty and lush greenery sprinkled with vibrant bougainvillea.
From the iconic Navagio Beach on the northwest of the island, with its famed shipwreck set against turquoise waters. To the enchanting Blue Caves on the northeast, which are best explored with a boating company or on a kayak, Zante’s natural attractions are simply breathtaking.
If you’re looking to snorkel, there are plenty of places dotted all around the island. If you’re on the south of the island, Cameo Island is a great place to snorkel, and that’s where I swam with several turtles. Although tourists complain about the 5euro entry fee, it offers a quiet place to sunbathe and relax, and you get a photo and keychain with your loved ones. So I think it was worth it.
Zante also provides the perfect escape into serenity with olive groves and vineyards further inland. There’s something for everyone. If you’re looking for a hotel recommendation, I stayed at the Castelli Hotel and recommend it to anyone. It’s in the perfect location, a short five-minute walk to the beachfront by Cameo Island, and the Castelli family is so welcoming. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, Castelli is the place!
