Travelers who stay occasionally at InterContinental, Holiday Inn and other IHG properties now have a straightforward way to collect points and basic elite perks without paying yearly fees. The card pairs everyday spending categories with automatic Silver Elite membership and a modest annual boost of elite night credits. Its welcome offer currently stands at 125,000 bonus points after $2,000 in purchases within the first three months, an incentive that ends November 18. ([1])
Automatic Status and the Path to Higher Tiers
Cardholders receive Silver Elite status immediately upon approval. That tier adds a 20 percent bonus on base points earned during stays, a modest but automatic lift for anyone who books through the IHG One Rewards program. Five elite night credits also post within six to eight weeks of opening the account, with subsequent credits arriving by February 1 each year. Those credits help members climb toward Gold or Platinum status and unlock milestone rewards. Spending $15,000 in a calendar year on the card itself brings an additional 10,000 bonus points plus Gold Elite status through the end of the following year. Gold members earn a 40 percent bonus on base points and receive complimentary Hertz Five Star status.
Earning Rates Across Spending Categories
The card awards five points per dollar at participating IHG hotels. Gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, takeout and eligible delivery earn three points per dollar. Utilities, internet, cable, phone and select streaming services earn three points per dollar through the end of 2026, then drop to two points per dollar. All other purchases earn two points per dollar. Combined with Silver Elite status, hotel stays can reach up to 17 points per dollar. Points redeem most effectively for award nights at IHG properties, where dynamic pricing means costs vary by date, demand and property. A 30 percent discount applies when buying points directly with the card, though larger bonuses sometimes appear during promotions.
Fourth-Night-Free Benefit and 2027 Changes
The fourth-reward-night-free perk lets members book four or more consecutive award nights and pay only for three. Starting in 2027, however, cardholders must spend at least $5,000 in a calendar year to unlock the benefit for the remainder of that year and the next. Cards that carry annual fees provide the same perk without any spending threshold. Other protections include purchase protection for 120 days, trip cancellation and interruption coverage up to $5,000 per traveler, and no foreign transaction fees. Limited Instacart+ and DashPass trials are also available when activated by the end of 2027.
Practical Trade-Offs Against Fee-Based IHG Cards
The absence of an anniversary free night and the upcoming spending requirement for the fourth-night benefit represent the clearest limitations. Cards such as the IHG One Rewards Premier carry a $150 annual fee yet supply an anniversary certificate worth up to 50,000 points, automatic Gold status and quarterly food-and-beverage vouchers. For travelers whose IHG stays are infrequent and who prefer to avoid any annual charge, the no-fee card still supplies usable points and entry-level status. Those who book multiple nights each year often find greater net value in stepping up to a card that removes the spending hurdle and adds the free-night certificate. The decision ultimately rests on how frequently an individual stays at IHG properties and whether the convenience of no annual fee outweighs the richer benefits available on the paid versions.
