Since she was a pup, my 9-year old shihtzu JetsetRuby has traveled to dozens of destinations and stayed in over 100 luxury hotels. She loves to travel, and it comes at a great time : Most travel businesses, from airlines to hotels, have loosened pet restrictions. These companies welcome pets, considering them part of the family, and Washington DC is a dog friendly destination — I was surprised to how pet friendly it is.
I’ve traveled with Ruby to incredibly dog friendly destinations, such as Mexico, Colorado and North Carolina, and Washington D.C. joins the list of travel destinations that are dog friendly. In fact, Washington D.C. is truly welcoming for travelers and their pups.
I recently traveled with Ruby on Amtrak, which has become dog friendly in the past few years. Amtrak allows dogs and cats up to 20 pounds for $26, provided they are traveling in approved pet carriers and check off the list of requirements in the Pet Release and Indemnification Agreement.
Once our train arrived at Union Station, it was time to check out all the attractions and activities that Washington D.C. has to offer for travelers and their dogs. Here are some of the most dog-friendly places Ruby and I stayed, dined and played in Washington D.C.
Four Seasons Washington D.C.
Four Seasons Washington D.C. in Georgetown is a great pet friendly hotel. The property may be one of the finest and most luxurious hotels in the destination, home to many discerning guests, but don’t let that intimidate you. The hotel is truly pet friendly and welcomed me and Ruby with open arms.
In fact, check out this welcome amenity for Ruby when we arrived at our room. Four Seasons really exceeds expectations for guests traveling with pets. Two pets up to 15 lbs are welcome for no additional fee at this hotel.
Dogs are also allowed in the outdoor terrace, as well as public spaces.
The hotel sits along the famed Ohio Canal, a national historical park, which is perfect for dog walking. It runs along Georgetown with amazing views and bridges.
If that’s not enough, the hotel sits directly across Rose Park, which offers sprawling lawns and walking paths for visitors and their pup.

Jaleo restaurant
Jaleo restaurant, helmed by celebrity chef Jose Andres, is one of the newer restaurants to open in D.C. The restaurant serves elevated Mexican cuisine, and it has an outdoor patio that is welcoming to guests.
The waiter even brought out some chicken for Ruby.
Ruby loved this restaurant because she was a fan of all the people watching in this bustling area. And, of course, the food was great. 
Rosewood Washington D.C.
Rosewood Washington D.C., just two blocks from Four Seasons D.C., is an intimate, 5-star hotel with only 55 rooms and suites… and it’s incredibly pet friendly. The hotel welcomes one dog per room weighing less than 50 lbs.
We booked one of the new 5-level townhouses (literally next door to the hotel). Each has its own private entrance right on the street, like a residence. This is perfect for dogs since they don’t have to in a crowded lobby, elevator, etc. There’s more privacy.
The townhouse is huge and came with an outdoor patio, which was great for Ruby to get fresh air and be outside.
Georgtown Washington Park
This sprawling park along the river is a magnet to dogs and their owners. Fortunately, it was just two blocks away from Rosewood Hotel. The park recently underwent an $80 million renovation, and you can tell. It’s beautiful, and there’s plenty to do for pets.
All of D.C. is pretty dog friendly. Ruby was even able to get close to the White House.
