Sporting Events

Visit Maryland

The state of Maryland has two franchises in the “Big Four” North American sports leagues (the NHL, NBA, MLB, and NFL), and both are based in Baltimore: MLB’s Orioles and the NFL’s Ravens.

The NFL’s Washington Commanders play their home games at FedExField, which is located in Landover, Maryland (about 33 miles from Baltimore). The NHL’s Washington Capitals, NBA’s Washington Wizards, and Washington Nationals of MLB are also close to Maryland.

Sports fans visiting Maryland should also know that the state launched mobile/online and in-person sports betting back in November. The available Maryland Sportsbooks are also offering special bonuses to new customers upon signing up. This includes first bet insurance in free wagers from BetMGM, a risk-free from FanDuel, and DraftKings if you wager $5.

The Ravens played their final regular season home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Jan. 1, but John Harbaugh’s company will have the chance to host a playoff game (or two) depending on other results. Otherwise, fans visiting Maryland in 2023 would have to plan a trip between September and late December or early January 2024 to see a Ravens’ home game.

As for the Orioles, they’ll open their 2023 season with a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park (Mar. 30 to Apr. 2). Baltimore’s season opener will take place against the New York Yankees on Apr. 6 inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Their final regular season game will be against Boston at home on Oct. 1, so there’s a lengthy six-month timeframe there for sports fans visiting Maryland to check out an Orioles home game.

The NCAA football season is done for 2022, but the Maryland Terrapins women’s and men’s basketball teams have both enjoyed strong showings in the 2022-23 season. Entering the new year,  the women’s team was ranked 13th.

The women’s team will play their final regular season home game against Iowa on Feb. 21. The men’s team will complete its regular-season finale on Feb. 26 against Northwestern.

Historic Sites

Visit Maryland

If you’re a history fanatic, Maryland is the place for you to come to visit. This, of course, includes the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine which is located in the Locust Point part of Baltimore, which is one of the best attractions for our Maryland travel guide.

During the War of 1812, the Americans successfully defended Fort McHenry from an attack by the British in 1814. This place is also historically significant because Fort McHenry was the place of inspiration for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Francis Scott Key was present for the bombardment and was inspired by the U.S. flag still waving afterward. Key wrote a poem called “Defence of Fort M’Henry”, which was used heavily in the creation of The Star-Spangled Banner that became the nation’s official national anthem in 1931.

Annapolis, the capital city of Maryland, is one of the nation’s oldest municipalities. There is a plethora of history to learn during a visit to Annapolis, which is home to significant sites such as the Maryland State House, St. John’s College, the United States Naval Academy, the William Paca House & Garden, and the Colonial Annapolis Historic District.

Breathtaking Ocean Views

Visit Maryland

The state of Maryland is also home to so many beautiful locations along the ocean that you’ll want to check out during your visit.

The boardwalk along Ocean City stretches for three miles. You can easily spend an entire day or two here. The beach is a popular place for residents and visitors year-round, and there are plenty of stores and restaurants to check out here.

Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis is also a must-see place for nature lovers coming to Maryland. More than a million visitors come to check out this location. If you’re a lover of outdoor activities like swimming, fishing, and hiking, you’ll want to place Sandy Point State Park near the very top of your Maryland to-do list.
