Nepal stands out for its rich avian life, yet much of the information needed to track changes in bird populations remains scattered or unrecorded. A growing community of birdwatchers, including many younger enthusiasts, is already generating observations that could help close those gaps. Recent findings show that only a fraction of these sightings reach the databases used by researchers and conservation groups.
Rich Avian Diversity Under Pressure
The country supports more than 900 bird species, one of which, the spiny babbler, occurs nowhere else. At the same time, 172 species face national threats linked to expanding cities, new roads and other infrastructure, and shifting climate patterns. These pressures make systematic monitoring essential for understanding which populations are declining and where protection efforts should focus.
Without consistent records of where birds appear and in what numbers, assessments of risk levels stay incomplete. Researchers rely on repeated observations to build accurate pictures of habitat use and population trends over time.
Survey Reveals Limited Data Sharing
A study that reached 135 birdwatchers found that just 37 percent upload their sightings to citizen-science platforms such as eBird or pass them to conservation organizations. Nearly half, 46 percent, keep their records private. The remaining share either shares selectively or follows other habits.
This pattern means valuable information on species presence, abundance, and location often stays out of reach for scientists who need it most. The result is slower progress on national red-list evaluations and habitat-protection planning.
Practical Steps That Make a Difference
Co-author Hem Bahadur Katuwal stresses the value of noting the species observed, the number of individuals, and the exact place and date. “This helps in fulfilling the data gaps related to bird population and habitat,” he said. Such details also support assessments of species’ risk levels for Nepal’s national Red Data List.
Even modest increases in sharing could improve the quality of long-term datasets. Platforms already exist that allow quick uploads from phones or computers, lowering the barrier for participants who want their records to contribute to broader science.
Opportunities Beyond Monitoring
Birdwatching also carries economic promise. Some visitors spend as much as 40,000 rupees, roughly $260, on a single trip. Yet Nepal’s tourism sector continues to center on trekking routes and religious sites, leaving bird-focused travel largely undeveloped.
Targeted promotion could draw more international and domestic visitors while creating income for local guides and communities. At the same time, the activity itself encourages people to spend time in natural areas and notice changes in the environment around them.
Path Forward
Encouraging wider participation in data sharing would multiply the conservation return on an already popular hobby. Younger generations driving the current growth in birdwatching represent a natural audience for simple guidance on recording and submitting observations.
With clearer channels between enthusiasts and researchers, Nepal could turn everyday sightings into a reliable stream of information that supports both species protection and sustainable tourism. The foundation already exists; wider use of it remains the missing step.
