Global ocean temperatures outside the polar regions set a new benchmark this summer. For 100 consecutive days from June 2 through September 10, daily average sea surface temperatures topped every prior reading for the same calendar date since records began in 1982. The streak, tracked by the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, marks the longest such run on record and arrives as an intensifying El Niño adds further warmth.
Record Temperatures Climb Higher
The peak arrived in late August. On August 22 the global average reached 21.10 degrees Celsius according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. Readings climbed further in the following days, hitting 21.18 degrees Celsius between August 22 and 27. Both figures drew on data compiled by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These values reflect conditions across vast stretches of open ocean. They do not include polar waters, yet they still signal a broad and persistent shift in the planet’s heat balance.
El Niño Extends the Trend
Climate scientist Zachary Labe of Climate Central noted that the current warmth is likely to persist. “Given the state of the intensifying El Niño,” he said during a September 10 briefing, the elevated temperatures are expected to continue in the near term. Labe also tied the longer pattern to human-driven climate change, stating that more than 90 percent of excess heat from greenhouse gases ends up in the oceans. Without reductions in emissions, he warned, the oceans will keep warming. The combination of the long-term trend and the current El Niño phase creates conditions that favor sustained high temperatures.
What This Means for Coastal Travel
Warmer surface waters can fuel stronger tropical storms. Travelers planning fall trips to hurricane-prone coasts may face elevated risks of rough seas or delayed flights as systems intensify more quickly. Popular beach destinations in the Caribbean and along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts often see the first effects. Coral reefs face added stress. Elevated temperatures accelerate bleaching events, which can turn once-vibrant snorkeling and diving sites pale and less appealing. Reefs around Florida, the Bahamas, and parts of Mexico have already shown signs of stress during previous warm periods; this streak raises the odds of further damage this season. Beachgoers may also notice the change directly. Water that feels unusually warm can alter swimming comfort and increase the chance of jellyfish blooms or algae outbreaks in some regions.
