Pet Expenses Can Fund Travel Rewards

Pet Expenses Can Fund Travel Rewards

Pet owners already spend hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on food, litter, toys and veterinary care. Those routine purchases can generate points, miles and cash back that help pay for flights and hotel stays. The Points Guy examined practical ways to capture rewards on these unavoidable costs without changing spending habits. ([1])

Check targeted card offers before checkout

Many issuers place limited-time promotions directly on cards that cover popular pet retailers. Cardholders can review Amex Offers and Chase Offers regularly to activate cash back or bonus points on sites such as Chewy or Bark. These targeted deals appear and disappear, so checking before each order helps capture the best available return. Shoppers can also compare portal rates through aggregators like Cashback Monitor or Savewise. Current examples include 6 percent cash back at Petco through one portal and 4 percent at PetSmart through another. Rates fluctuate, so verifying the highest payout each time maximizes earnings on recurring purchases.

Stack store loyalty programs and apps

Major pet chains operate their own free rewards programs that add another layer of value. Petco Perks awards 10 points per dollar, with redemptions beginning at 5,000 points for $5 in store credit. PetSmart Treats Rewards starts at 10 points per dollar and allows redemptions from 1,000 points for $2. The United MileagePlus X app offers an additional route for United cardholders. Users can buy electronic gift cards for Petco, Walmart or similar retailers inside the app and earn bonus miles on the purchase. United cardholders receive a 25 percent mileage bonus on activity completed through the app.

Handle larger bills with the right cards

Unexpected veterinary expenses sometimes require financing. Several no-annual-fee cards provide an introductory 0 percent APR period on new purchases, allowing owners to spread costs over many months while still earning rewards. One editor used this approach for a several-thousand-dollar emergency procedure and paid the balance in manageable installments. For ongoing charges that fall outside bonus categories, everyday-earning cards deliver steady returns. Options include the Chase Freedom Unlimited at 1.5 percent cash back, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card at 2 miles per dollar, and the Citi Double Cash Card at 2 percent cash back overall.

Combine subscription discounts with premium cards

Amazon offers subscription savings on recurring pet items such as food and treats. The Amazon Prime Visa adds 5 percent back on those purchases for Prime members. Layering the subscription discount with the card rebate and any portal earnings further increases the overall return. Pet owners who combine these methods turn ordinary monthly spending into meaningful travel balances. The same dollars that cover kibble and checkups can help cover the next flight or hotel stay.
