American Airlines charges for checked bags on many routes, and the costs can add up quickly for travelers who do not plan ahead. Fees depend on the destination, fare type, and whether a passenger qualifies for waivers through status or credit cards. Understanding the rules before heading to the airport helps avoid surprise charges at the counter. ([1])

Carry-On Options Stay Free for Everyone

Every passenger on an American Airlines flight can bring one full-size carry-on bag plus one personal item without paying extra. The personal item must fit under the seat and measure no more than 18 by 14 by 8 inches. Common examples include backpacks, purses, and laptop bags. A standard carry-on bag can measure up to 22 by 14 by 9 inches and must fit in the overhead bin or the airport sizer. Soft-sided garment bags up to 51 inches long also qualify. These allowances apply even to basic economy tickets, giving travelers a reliable way to travel light at no cost.

Domestic and Short International Fees Start at $45

On flights within the United States, to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and parts of Central America, checked bag charges vary by purchase method and fare. Basic economy passengers pay $50 online or $55 at the airport for the first bag, while main cabin passengers pay $45 or $50. A second bag costs more, reaching $60 online for basic economy travelers. Third and fourth bags jump to $200 each. These rates apply to most domestic routes and some nearby international ones. Passengers who check bags at the last minute face the higher airport prices, so booking fees in advance saves money when a waiver does not apply.

Longer International Flights Often Include Free Bags

Transatlantic and transpacific routes provide at least one free checked bag for main cabin passengers. Basic economy travelers pay $85 for the first bag on flights to Europe but receive it free on routes to Asia and Australia. A second bag typically costs $100, with additional bags at $200 each. Flights to South America follow a similar pattern, with main cabin passengers enjoying one free bag and basic economy paying $70. These inclusions reduce the financial impact for longer trips, though weight and size limits still apply across all routes.

Overweight and Oversize Bags Trigger Extra Charges

Bags exceeding 50 pounds or 62 linear inches face additional fees on top of standard charges. A bag between 50 and 53 pounds costs $30 more, while those up to 70 pounds can add $100 to $200. Oversize bags between 62 and 65 linear inches incur a $30 fee, with larger items reaching $150 to $200. American does not accept bags over 100 pounds or 115 linear inches. When a bag violates both weight and size rules, the airline applies only the higher penalty. Sports equipment generally follows the same limits, though scuba tanks and windsurfing gear carry separate $150 charges.

Status, Cards, and Premium Fares Provide Waivers

Several options eliminate or reduce checked bag fees for eligible travelers. AAdvantage elite members receive one to three free bags depending on their tier, and up to eight companions on the same reservation share the benefit. Certain Citi co-branded credit cards also grant a free first bag for the cardholder and a set number of companions. Premium cabin tickets include two or three free checked bags. Annual travel credits on premium rewards cards can offset fees when other waivers do not apply. These benefits cannot be combined beyond the stated allowances, so travelers should verify their exact entitlements before travel. Planning around these options keeps costs down and prevents last-minute surprises at the airport.
