Southwest Airlines opened a points-only promotion on August 28 that lets Rapid Rewards members book certain flights at redemption rates reaching two to four times the points’ usual worth. The limited window covers travel from mid-September 2026 into early March 2027 and closes at the end of the month. Travelers who act quickly can lock in outsized value on routes that normally deliver closer to 1.25 cents per point. ([1])

Record Redemption Rates Emerge on Select Routes

Initial searches during the sale turned up award prices that far exceed typical returns. One standout example is a November 4 flight from Phoenix to Las Vegas priced at $136 in cash but available for only 3,000 points, producing a value of roughly 4.3 cents per point. Another strong result appeared on a November 8 nonstop from Sacramento to Honolulu, where a $279 cash fare dropped to 10,000 points for nearly 2.8 cents per point.

Even connecting itineraries showed meaningful savings. Flights from Boise to Long Beach that cost $76 in cash became available for 3,000 points on certain October and November dates. A connecting option from Las Vegas to Honolulu via Hilo also surfaced at 10,000 points against a cash price near $338, again clearing 3 cents per point.

Sale Window and Core Rules

The promotion requires bookings by August 31 at 11:59 p.m. PDT and applies only to travel booked at least 21 days ahead. Eligible dates run from September 18, 2026, through March 3, 2027, though several blackout periods block peak holiday travel. Continental U.S. and interisland Hawaii flights face restrictions on November 28 and 30, multiple December dates, and selected January and February days in 2027. Longer-haul routes to Hawaii and beyond carry broader blackouts from late November through early January.

The deal focuses on nonstop flights, yet comparable value has appeared on some one-stop itineraries. Cash fares remain unchanged or even slightly higher during the period, so members must switch to the points view or use the Low Fare Calendar to see the discounts.

Companion Pass Holders Gain Extra Leverage

Travelers holding the Southwest Companion Pass can double the impact by booking two tickets for the price of one. In the strongest cases, that structure pushes effective value above 8 cents per point. Members without enough points on hand can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards balances to cover the awards before the window closes.

Practical Steps to Capture the Deals

Success depends on checking the points pricing directly rather than relying on cash displays. The Low Fare Calendar view makes it simple to scan wide date ranges and toggle between payment types. Because availability can shift quickly, frequent searches across desired city pairs remain the most reliable approach.

With only three days left in the promotion, the opportunity is narrow but concrete for anyone planning fall or winter travel on Southwest routes.
