Every year, millions of Americans pack up and cross state lines in search of something better – lower costs, warmer weather, new opportunities. It’s a deeply American impulse. Yet certain states consistently manage to hold onto their people, earning a reputation not just as places people move to, but as places people genuinely never want to leave. The reasons differ by latitude and local culture, but the common thread is quality of life that goes beyond a single factor – a combination of affordability, safety, health, education, and a sense of place that keeps roots firmly planted.

Researchers and data analysts have spent years trying to quantify that stickiness. When analyzed for correlations to resident retention, just two factors showed significant impact: home prices and cost of living. Still, the full picture is more nuanced than any single spreadsheet can capture. The seven states below have earned their reputation through a genuinely hard-to-argue-with combination of measurable advantages and the kind of day-to-day livability that turns a place to live into a place to stay forever.

Massachusetts is the best state to live in, due in large part to its strong healthcare system and high-quality education. The Bay State has the lowest premature death rate in the country and the fifth-lowest share of adults in fair or poor health, and it also has the highest share of residents with health insurance coverage, at 97.4%. Those are extraordinary numbers for a state of nearly seven million people, and they translate directly into a sense of security that makes leaving feel genuinely unnecessary. Good-quality education has helped the state’s residents succeed financially, with the second-highest median household income, at over $101,000.

Healthcare in Massachusetts ranks first in the nation for access to care, with the greatest number of providers per capita for both primary care and mental health, and the state’s residents also have a high level of insurance coverage, with only 3% of the populace reporting they do not have insurance. The state is home to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, and Boston College, and residents are among the most educated in the nation. When your neighbors include some of the sharpest minds in the world and your doctors are among the best-resourced in the country, the calculus for leaving gets much harder to justify.

Idaho: The Gem State’s Meteoric Rise

Idaho is the second-best state to live in, boasting one of the lowest median real estate tax rates in the country, at just 0.5%, along with the seventh-highest homeownership rate. It also has the fourth-lowest tax rates overall and the highest median household income growth, making it a great place to build and grow wealth. That rise is no accident – Idaho has made a huge jump from its 32nd-place ranking in 2017, and the state has especially benefited from its recent economic boom. In 2022, Idaho had the fastest-growing economy in the nation and the nation’s second-highest 5-year GDP growth rate at 17%.

The Gem State has the seventh-lowest share of urban interstates experiencing congestion during peak hours and the third-smallest proportion of major roads in poor or mediocre condition, which naturally leads to some of the lowest average commute times in the country. To top things off, Idaho is a pretty safe state – it has the 13th-lowest violent crime rate and the lowest property crime rate in the country. Short commutes, low crime, fast income growth, and mountains on the horizon: it’s a package deal that’s increasingly hard to walk away from.

Wisconsin: Midwest Stability Done Right

One of the clearest trends in recent quality-of-life rankings is the rise of the Midwest as a quality-of-life leader. With Wisconsin ranking in the top five, the region stands out for balancing strong economic, health, and educational outcomes with relatively better affordability. The state’s schools are among the best performing in the nation and lead the country in high school graduation rates. The cost of living is lower than the national average, and levels of poverty are low, while unemployment sits at 2.9%, much lower than the national average.

With 35% of movers staying in-state, Wisconsinites are committed. Like Minnesota, Wisconsin may struggle with low GDP and job growth, but the Badger State boasts a low average home price ($285,506 in January 2024), which makes it easier to stick close to home than venture out. Wisconsin balances affordability with strong quality metrics across healthcare, education, and safety, making it attractive for families prioritizing value. There’s a quiet satisfaction to life in Wisconsin that the numbers consistently back up, even if it doesn’t generate the same headlines as flashier Sun Belt destinations.

WalletHub ranked Minnesota the third-best state to raise a family in 2024, citing the high median family salary and low levels of separation and divorce. The state provides excellent early-education opportunities and ranks high for K-12 performance. Minnesota ranks high for opportunity metrics and has one of the lowest poverty levels in the country, with just nine percent of residents living at or below the poverty line. Those figures are striking for a large, diverse state, and they signal that the prosperity here is more broadly shared than in many other top-ranked states.

35% of Minnesotan movers stick around, and those who do will benefit from average home prices below the national average, at $322,811 as of January 2024. Those prices have risen just 28% since 2000, the 5th lowest rate in the nation. Minnesota stands out with the Mayo Clinic, extensive discrimination protections, and an eco-friendly lake culture, though harsh winters and childcare availability remain challenges. Still, for families that have put down roots here, the winters are a small price to pay for everything else on offer.

New Hampshire: Small State, Outsized Quality of Life

New Hampshire has the least economic hardship and the lowest levels of poverty and food insecurity in the nation. The state also has the country’s lowest levels of crime and incarceration, and it enjoys some of the best air quality in the country. For a small New England state sandwiched between Vermont and the Atlantic, that’s a remarkable collection of superlatives. States like New Hampshire show that quality of life is increasingly driven by safety and economic stability, not just taxes or climate.

New Hampshire had the lowest percentage of its population living in poverty, the lowest crime rate, and also stands out for income growth – all within a state that charges no broad-based income tax and no general sales tax. Hawaii and New Hampshire follow Massachusetts with similarly robust healthcare systems. The combination of fiscal lightness, safety, and natural beauty across its lakes and White Mountains creates a quality of life that quietly keeps residents exactly where they are.

North Carolina: The Nation’s New Migration Magnet

North Carolina last year attracted more new residents – 84,000 people – from other parts of the country than any other state, a title held by Texas in 2024 and Florida in the two years before that. That’s not just a migration story. It’s a retention story too, because states that attract large numbers of newcomers tend to do so only when existing residents are also content to stay.

The state’s strong appeal is due to its business climate, affordable living, and quality of life, and that appeal is showing up clearly in economic data across the board. If current trends continue, the state is projected to surpass both Georgia and Ohio and become the seventh largest state in the early 2030s. The Research Triangle anchors a booming tech and life sciences economy, college towns give it cultural energy, and the mountains and coast offer natural variety that few states can match. Once people arrive, they tend to realize they’ve landed somewhere genuinely special.

South Carolina had the highest overall growth rate in the country last year at 1.5%, a distinction among states held by Florida in 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. That growth doesn’t happen without residents choosing to stay. South Carolina also saw the largest net migration gain per 10,000 residents in 2026. Cities like Greenville and Charleston have undergone remarkable transformations over the past decade, drawing remote workers, retirees, and young families who quickly discover that leaving is harder than they expected.

Rapid growth has been most notable in Horry County, Berkeley County, and Lancaster County, with several others – including York, Beaufort, Charleston, Jasper, and Dorchester – seeing growth rates above 12%. The state combines a relatively affordable cost of living with mild winters, scenic coastline, and a food and arts culture that has quietly blossomed over the last decade. South Carolina attracted 66,600 domestic migrants in the most recent measured year, making it one of the few states where both the inbound and stay-put numbers are telling the same story at the same time.

What These States Have in Common

On the surface, this is a geographically and politically diverse group – cold Midwestern winters sit alongside Carolina sunshine, and New England pragmatism coexists with Mountain West optimism. Yet the through-line is clear. When analyzed for correlations to stickiness, just two factors showed significant impact: home prices and cost of living, and every state on this list manages both with more grace than most. Beyond affordability, each of these states also punches above its weight on healthcare, education, or safety – often all three simultaneously.

What the data ultimately confirms is something most long-time residents of these states already know intuitively: the best reason to stay somewhere isn’t just that leaving seems hard. It’s that, on a genuine, day-to-day basis, there’s simply nowhere better to be. Wisconsin, Idaho, and Minnesota all rose into the top five best states to live in recent rankings, and combined with Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and South Carolina, they form a portrait of American livability that is more geographically varied – and more grounded in real data – than any single regional narrative can contain. The residents who stay in these places aren’t simply staying put. They’re staying by choice.
