Cartagena’s coastal waters hold a cluster of islands that blend natural beauty with lingering stories from Colombia’s past. Visitors arriving by boat often hear tales of one particular site on Isla Grande, where an alleged hideaway once linked to Pablo Escobar is said to stand amid the palms. The connection remains contested and unverified, yet it adds an unexpected layer to what is primarily a protected marine destination. ([1])

The Rosario Islands form part of a national coral reef park roughly an hour from the mainland city. Their appeal lies in clear waters, accessible reefs, and a quieter pace than many Caribbean hotspots. Travelers who venture beyond day trips discover both the marine life and the communities that call the area home.

Arrival and the Weight of Local Lore

Boats depart Cartagena’s marina and pass through the city’s historic walls before entering open Caribbean waters. The crossing can be choppy, especially outside the calmer months from December to April. Upon reaching a sheltered bay on Isla Grande known as La Playita, guides sometimes point out a structure framed by tall palms and describe its rumored past.

Accounts of sunken planes and secluded estates circulate among visitors, though many details trace back to broader regional history rather than confirmed events at this specific location. The author of one detailed travel account noted arriving without prior knowledge of these stories and left with a sense of the islands’ layered reputation rather than firm conclusions.

A Protected Marine Environment

The archipelago consists of 27 islets and forms the Natural Coral National Park of the Rosarios and San Bernardo Islands. Isla Grande serves as the main hub for most visitors, offering easier access to snorkeling sites and basic infrastructure. Nearby areas include the party-oriented Cholón and the more distant San Bernardo group.

Reef protection supports diverse marine life, including sea turtles, eels, and occasional sightings of dolphins. Snorkeling and diving trips operate from both Cartagena and the islands themselves, with many sites suitable for beginners due to relatively calm conditions. One popular spot near Isla Grande features an artificial reef created from a decommissioned plane, which draws fish regardless of its debated origins.

Local Communities and Daily Life

Indigenous Orika residents maintain a presence on Isla Grande and smaller islets through fishing and cultural tourism. Guided experiences often include lessons on Afro-Caribbean heritage, traditional cooking, music performances, and kayak tours through mangrove forests. These outings highlight how tourism intersects with longstanding island practices.

Evening options sometimes extend to bioluminescent plankton tours along the coast. Such activities provide a contrast to the more commercial beach stops and offer insight into adaptation amid growing visitor numbers.

Planning a Visit

Day tours from Cartagena typically include multiple stops, lunch, and snorkeling opportunities, with group sizes ranging from small catamarans to larger boats. Independent travelers can arrange public ferries or private charters for overnight stays at hostels or small resorts on Isla Grande. Prebooking return transport is advisable, as schedules are limited.

Those seeking a measured experience often combine reef time with community visits rather than rushing through fixed itineraries. The islands reward visitors who allow space for both the underwater world and the quieter rhythms of island life.

The Rosario Islands continue to attract travelers drawn by their reefs and the occasional mention of their storied past. What remains clearest is the value of the protected waters themselves, which offer a tangible reason to explore beyond the mainland.
