In 2020, travelers were reaching their breaking points to escape Covid-19 quarantine. Many would risk enduring passenger shaming on flights and checking into hotels despite safety concerns, and now we know the destinations travelers visited to escape Covid-19 in 2020.

TripAdvisor released its Trending Destinations Worldwide report, which highlights the top destinations that were on the upswing, growing in popularity, gaining positive reviews, and fueling wanderlust in travelers — despite “no travel” advisories.

Here are the top 10 destinations travelers visited to escape Covid-19 in 2020.

  1. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
  2. Corsica, France
  3. Doha, Qatar
  4. Sanya, China
  5. Gatlinburg, Tennessee
  6. Queenstown, New Zealand
  7. Tulum, Mexico
  8. Natal, Brazil
  9. Kas, Turkey
  10. Guadeloupe

Only one destination in America made the list: Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Tennessee never implemented travel restrictions for out-of-state travelers.

Many of these destinations on the list account for local or regional travel. For instance, New Zealand’s border was closed off for many months.

However, some destinations made headlines for other reasons. Tulum was in the news for the parties millennials attended, and cases of Covid-19 were contact traced to the small beach town in Mexico.

Due to a new requirement by CDC, all travelers to Mexico must now get an on-site Covid-19 test when checking into their hotel.

Should you even travel right now?

Do not travel if you are feeling unwell or have tested positive for COVID-19. Also, be sure to take a COVID-19 test before you even think about packing your bags for a vacation.

Once you are in the clear, and know you are COVID-19 free, do your homework, as in figure out when you want to go on vacation, reading on all travel restrictions, rules, number of Covid-19 cases, and what may or may not be open (dining, nightlife, etc). Always practice social distancing.

Car travel is considered the safest mode to vacation during COVID-19. When you have your own car, you don’t have to be in the same space as strangers (who you don’t know have COVID-19 or not) and you reduce your risk of getting, infecting or transmitting the virus.
