Southern Kenya – Thermal drones fitted with heat-sensing cameras are being used to track elephant movements after dark and alert communities before conflicts arise near Amboseli National Park. The technology addresses a long-standing problem in the region, where the park lacks a perimeter fence and elephants regularly cross into surrounding farmlands. A 2025 census by the Kenya Wildlife Service counted 1,903 elephants in the Amboseli area out of a national total of 42,072.
The Scale of the Challenge
Roughly 200,000 people live across the broader Amboseli ecosystem, which spans about 8,093 square kilometers of rangelands, wetlands, and wildlife corridors. The park itself covers just 392 square kilometers, so its long-term viability depends on the condition of the surrounding community lands. Smallholder farmers in villages such as Inkoisuk, roughly 30 kilometers from the park boundary, have faced repeated crop losses when elephants enter their fields. One resident, Dominic Mutua, described the previous routine of staying awake through much of the night to chase animals away. Without early detection tools, these encounters often escalated into direct confrontations that put both people and wildlife at risk. The absence of physical barriers means movement between protected areas and farmland remains fluid, increasing the frequency of such incidents.
How the Drones Operate
The drones provide real-time monitoring that was previously difficult to achieve at night or across large distances. Conservation teams receive alerts when elephants approach settlements, allowing them to intervene before damage occurs. In addition to data collection, the aircraft can guide animals back toward safer routes without the need for more intrusive methods. Amy Baird, deputy director of the Big Life Foundation, noted that the devices support both monitoring and active deterrence in a way that keeps elephants out of farms and villages. The U.S.-based nonprofit partners with local communities to safeguard elephant populations and maintain habitat connectivity across the ecosystem. Early warnings reduce the hours farmers once spent on guard duty and lower the chance of dangerous close encounters.

Several groups share responsibility for managing the conflict. The Kenya Wildlife Service conducts population surveys and sets overall policy. Local farmers bear the direct costs of lost crops.
