These National Parks Are Surprisingly Remarkable To Explore in the Winter

Winter isn’t the typical, ideal travel time for most people. The frigid temperatures and shorter days aren’t exactly enticing to many people. However, those who do decide to venture out of their homes and into our national parks can experience some brilliant scenes.

These national parks across the United States in the wintertime will blow you away and give you a new love of the wild. Plus, you’ll find you have them almost all to yourselves, making it even more magical!

The park isn’t as accessible in the winter as it is in other seasons, as Trail Ridge Road is closed. However, even with it closed, many options are available for hiking and exploring. My two favorite areas are Deer Mountain and the Bear Lake trailhead area.

Make sure to rent or bring snowshoes to make your hiking experience more enjoyable.

In the winter, Arches sees a minuscule amount of people versus the usual summer droves. In my opinion, it’s a much more enjoyable experience. Additionally, the mixture of red rock and white snow (if lucky) is unbelievably beautiful. Because the days are shorter, my biggest suggestion is to be in the park for sunrise and spend the entire day there.

This is one where I haven’t been yet, but the photos of Giant Sequoia covered in snow break my brain. It is so pretty and may be one of the most unique views in America. Every car must carry chains throughout the park. Furthermore, it’s important to keep an eye on the current conditions.

The Congress Trail should be open and will be your best photography area to explore.

Like Arches, Canyonlands is stunning and one of the national parks to visit in winter. When I visited on a weekday, I saw four people. Talk about having some solitary moments out in nature. This is also a perfect time to visit the ordinarily crazy Mesa Arch for sunrise.

Just be aware that the trail might be icy, and it would be wise to wear microspikes. Lastly, it’s not uncommon for lows to be in the teens, so come appropriately dressed.

One of the jewels of North America. Winter in Banff National Park in southern Canada is breathtaking, though it is much more limited in potential than during the summer.

However, book your trip if you’re looking for picturesque locations and enjoying the snow, ice skating, skiing/snowboarding, and freezing temperatures!

Don’t Forget Your Gear

Before your trip, ensure you have the proper gear to stay warm and enjoy your adventures, especially since these parks can get pretty cold in the winter.

  • Outer Shell
  • Snowshoes
  • Microspikes
  • Moisture-wicking baselayer
  • Warm Wool Socks
  • Gloves
  • Fleece Mid-Layer
