This Hong Kong Hotspot Was Just Voted Best Restaurant In Asia — Take A Look

The Chairman Hong Kong

The Chairman in Hong Kong was just ranked the best restaurant in Asia.

This is according to the recent Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021 list by The World’s 50 Best, an annual ranking of the best restaurants in the world.

Launched in 2009, Cantonese restaurant The Chairman in Central, owned by Danny Yip, is renowned for its authentic, ingredients-driven cuisine. It won both coveted titles of “Best Restaurant in Asia” and “Best Restaurant in China” for 2021. This is the first time a Hong Kong restaurant has been ranked as No 1 on the Best Restaurant in Asia list.

Held virtually before a global audience on 25 March, the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021 awards ceremony also announced other Hong Kong restaurants that made the list, including newcomer Mono (No.44), as well as re-entries Caprice (No.28) and Ta Vie (No.38). Vea (No.16) doubled as this year’s recipient of the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award.

Odette in Singapore ranked No 2 restaurant in Asia, followed by Den in Tokyo (No. 3), Le Du in Bangkok (No. 4) and Gaggan Anand in Bangkok (No. 5).

This is The Chairman’s second year in a row receiving the “Best Restaurant in China” accolade.

According to the World’s 50 Best organization, highlights of The Chairman include:

  • What to order: The perennial favorite is Chef Kwok Keung Tung’s steamed flowery crab, a prized delicacy from the South China Sea renowned for its sweet taste. In The Chairman’s recipe, it is steamed with 15-year-old Chinese wine, chicken fat and claim juice, and served alongside fragrant chicken oil and flat rice noodles.
  • Forgotten ingredients: In 2019, Tung and Yip developed a fresh range of seasonal dishes inspired by forgotten luxury ingredients from southern China. After making pilgrimages to remote villages, the team procured unsung products like 20-year-pickled lemon, sugar-roasted chrysanthemum and elusive fresh mini water crabs.
