United Airlines Baggage Fees: Perks to Avoid Paying

United Airlines baggage rules depend on ticket type, destination, elite status and credit card holdings, so what one passenger pays another often flies free. The airline permits one personal item for everyone at no charge, yet full-size carry-ons and checked bags trigger fees for many travelers on basic economy fares. Checking the carrier’s fee calculator before travel remains the most reliable way to confirm exact costs for a given itinerary. ([1])

Carry-On Limits and Basic Economy Rules

All passengers may bring one personal item that fits under the seat, sized no larger than 9 by 17 by 10 inches. Most travelers can also add one carry-on measuring up to 22 by 14 by 9 inches without extra cost. Basic economy passengers face tighter restrictions and generally receive only the personal item allowance. Those who attempt to board with a full-size carry-on on basic economy tickets must check the bag at the gate and pay both the standard checked fee and an additional $25 handling charge. Several groups escape this restriction, including MileagePlus Premier members with companions on the same booking, primary holders of qualifying United credit cards, Star Alliance Gold members, and passengers on flights to Canada, South America or across the Atlantic and Pacific.

Domestic Checked Bag Costs

Fees for flights inside North America, Central America and the Caribbean follow a clear structure for standard economy passengers without status or card benefits. Prepaying at least 24 hours ahead lowers the price by $5 on the first two bags.

Bag Prepaid 24+ Hours Paid Within 24 Hours
First $45 $50
Second $55 $60
Third $200 $200

Economy bags are limited to 50 pounds unless the traveler holds Premier status or flies in a premium cabin, which raises the limit to 70 pounds. Overweight charges begin at $100 and can reach several hundred dollars depending on how far the bag exceeds the limit.

International and Excess Bag Variations

Long-haul routes show more variation by region. Standard economy tickets to South America, Europe and Africa typically include one free checked bag, while Asia routes often allow two. Basic economy allowances differ by destination and may require payment even for the first bag on some paths. A third checked bag on domestic flights usually costs $200. United accepts excess baggage only when space permits and may impose seasonal caps on certain routes. Sporting equipment such as skis or snowboards generally counts as a regular checked bag with no extra charge beyond standard or overweight fees, though kayaks and canoes are not accepted.

Status, Cards and Cabin Upgrades That Waive Fees

MileagePlus Premier members receive free checked bags on flights within the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Silver members and up to nine companions on the same reservation get the first bag free, Gold members receive two, and Platinum, 1K and Global Services members receive three, all up to 70 pounds each. Several United cobranded cards also eliminate fees for the first or first two bags. The Explorer and Business cards cover the initial bag, while Quest, Club and Club Business cards cover the first two. Passengers in United Polaris business class, United Business, United First or Premium Plus generally receive two free checked bags as well.

Practical Steps Before Booking or Travel

Reviewing the specific itinerary on United’s baggage calculator provides the most current pricing once a passenger logs in. Combining elite status, an eligible credit card and a premium cabin booking often eliminates fees entirely for travelers who check bags regularly. Those without such benefits can still reduce costs by prepaying and staying within weight and size limits.
