17 Best Places to Visit in the United States This March

[table_of_contents]

March means warmer weather in most of the United States. It’s also a perfect time to plan your next travel adventure, and it doesn’t have to break the bank!. If you live in the United States, there are plenty of places you can visit by plane or by car.

While spring breakers flock to favorite beach destinations, there are scores of places to visit for sun, solace, and even a bit of fun. Let’s take a look at some of my favorite destinations you can visit during the month of March in the United States!

Burlington VT

A photograph depicting The Church Street Marketplace in Burlington, Vermont. The image showcases the pedestrian-friendly street with shops and commercial establishments lining both sides. People are visible engaging in typical weekday activities, such as shopping or strolling along the brick-paved walkway.

Situated near Lake Champlain in the northwest section of Vermont, Burlington is a hub of activities. A town designed for outdoor lovers, March means you may catch some final days on the slopes, or hike through the area to witness the snow melting to reveal flora exploding to life. Biking is a common activity.

Whether you’re looking to cycle through nature or hit the sleek inclines on a fat tire bike, the scenic city has trails for all levels. Climbing is a hit, too. Camels Hump State Park, Bolton Valley, and Smugglers Notch are some favorite local spots to scale. If the temps are still frigid, ice climbing is also ideal. Indoor gyms are also in abundance. Tapping season is in full swing, meaning fresh maple syrup.

Many local farms sell their sweet liquid in town and are open for on-site visits to see the full operational experience. MapleFest celebration hits Smugglers Notch Resort, guaranteeing sweet nectars for your tastebuds, and March is the last time to visit the Hotel Vermont’s legendary Ice bar.

Burlington hosts numerous local breweries and restaurants as well as historic landmarks and institutions. Museums like ECHO at the Leahy Center highlight the region’s natural history while Ethan Allen Homestead pays homage to the area’s Revolutionary War significance. In short, Burlington is a small city with scores to explore.

Syracuse, NY

A photograph depicting the Syracuse Saving Bank Building at Clinton Square in Syracuse, New York. The image captures the architectural features of the building, showcasing its design against the urban backdrop. The structure stands prominently within the cityscape, characterized by classic elements reflective of its historical significance.

Dig into the final weeks of winter in upstate New York. The air may be crisp and cold, but the activities are full steam ahead. St. Patrick’s festivities take centerstage this month with the Syracuse Parade and the CNY Irish Feis—the traditional Irish dance competition held at the New York State fairgrounds.

Then, make a run for it with the four-mile Shamrock Run or the Syracuse Half Marathon. After indulging in Celtic-themed endeavors, immerse yourself in the flavors of the city. Peruse the food stalls and vendors of the Salt City Market. Discover your favorite fermentation when you sip your way through the local breweries. Swirl wine from the Finger Lakes or sample ciders from nearby cideries.

Spend time at the Salt Museum to learn about the city’s founding industry. For family time, explore the Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) or the Erie Canal Museum—a man-made waterway that once flowed near the city center. You may even get some fresh powder to slide down the hills of Labrador or Song Mountains.

If you seek a full day of tubing head to Camillus Sky Park. Glide over frozen waters at Sunnycrest Ice Rink during its final winter fling. If it’s arts you seek, the Landmark Theater, the Gifford Family Theatre, and the Central New York Playhouse. Explore dramatic works at the Syracuse Stage and the finest vocal talents at the Syracuse Opera.

Keep snug at quaint local bed and breakfasts and inns. These make excellent locations to base your daily adventures. Syracuse is also home to major hotel chains to keep you comfortable during your stay. And, in March, prices are perfect for any budget.

Death Valley, CA

A landscape photograph capturing the morning light at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park, California. The image showcases the natural beauty of the arid terrain and geological formations illuminated by the soft morning light

The weather in March is exquisite for exploring this National Park. Death Valley has extraordinary hikes, trail runs, camping, and biking, spanning over three million acres of the Mojave and Great Basin deserts. Parts of this terrain were used as a location to film two Star Wars movies. Discover the Eureka Dunes during your adventure.

These sweeping sands are breathtaking, and unique organisms are renewed as the buds begin to bloom including five beetle species found nowhere else. Although the area appears to be just a desolate dustbowl, spring brings a flourish of life to the 11,000 feet of elevation. Wildflowers flourish and plant life reignites in a flurry of colors. Spring is also ideal for campers and stargazers.

The cooler temperatures make for great overnight conditions and Death Valley is a must for every star enthusiast. The open sky and lack of air pollution allow clear nights and the unfathomable ability to see celestial objects. Whether you’re looking to get closer to nature, see a desert in bloom, or escape for solace, Death Valley is full of magical wonders you need to see to believe.

Miami, FL

A panorama capturing Sunny Isles Beach in Florida, specifically Miami Beach. The image showcases the Atlantic Ocean beach with a broad seascape. The turquoise color of the sea water is prominently featured, providing a serene and picturesque view.

I have lived in Saint Augustine, Florida and have spent plenty of time near the beautiful beaches there. Even though I love that part of the Florida coastline, Miami has a certain charm to it that you don’t find anywhere else in Florida.

Miami possesses an abundance of cultural influences that add to its infectious charisma. Dazzling restaurants and clubs dot the nightlife scene. Impeccable dining can be found on the warm sandy shores and in its opulent resorts. Stunning art surprises in the alleys as well as in museums like the Contemporary Art Museum or the Perez Art Museum.

Music echoes from street corners and can be found in establishments like the Faena Theatre or the elaborate Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center. March plays host to an array of diverse festivals.

Whether it’s the Miami-Dade Youth Fair and Exposition, Winter Party Festival, Asian Culture Fest, Baila Conmigo Fest, or the Miami Open tennis tournament, this tireless town has loads to offer. Plus, the beaches are temperate, and the days have yet to sizzle.  Regardless of spring breakers, March is still an ideal time to visit this captivating city.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

A photograph capturing the view of Skyline Drive from Bearfence Mountain in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.

The Shenandoah Valley is a national park in part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A protected area with over 200,000 sprawling acres, the grounds host over 500 miles of trails. While many say to visit this stretch of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the fall, spring is also idyllic. Wildflowers are in bloom. Mountain snow has melted in lush flowing streams.

The air is crisp and clean, and the miles of trails are eagerly awaiting explorers. Skyline Drive is a popular driving route, encompassing 105 miles of peaceful scenery. Daily highs average in the mid-50s, though spring weather varies. This destination is ideal for avid hikers, climbers, and campers who are itching to return to nature after a winter hibernation. And Shenandoah won’t disappoint.

Its sweeping views will leave you breathless and the fanfare of flora and fauna releases fresh fragrance noting the forthcoming spring. There are trails to keep you moving for days or short hikes to stretch your legs.

Lake Tahoe, CA

A photograph capturing South Lake Tahoe, California. The image provides a view of the landscape with the lake, surrounding terrain, and urban development in the vicinity.

The powder is still packed in this mountain town. Lake Tahoe is a tremendous vacation spot all year long, and is one of the most gorgeous lakes in the entire United States. The late February snow adds an extra dusting of magic to the picture-perfect destination. Tahoe is divided along the Nevada and California state lines, with about two-thirds situated in the Golden State.

The southern part of the lake is where popular ski resorts like Heavenly, Sierra at Tahoe, and Kirkwood are located, equating to a plethora of slopes available to slide to your heart’s content. For those disinterested in the mountain trails, Lake Tahoe hosts other cold-weather activities like ice skating, sledding, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.

When you’re looking to warm up, casinos, dining, spas, and shopping are all in abundance. Nightlife is revving. With clubs, bars, and gaming, this south Lake Tahoe corridor is the spot for an unforgettable afterparty. Hotels, vacation rentals, cabins, and resorts are all available to meet your staying needs—even pet-friendly establishments.

Washington, D.C.

A photograph depicting the Capitol building against a clear morning blue sky. The image emphasizes the iconic architectural structure, serving as the seat of the United States Congress. The neoclassical design of the building is prominent, with the dome and columns standing out against the sky.

The nation’s capital is in full bloom in March. One of the biggest draws and meet-see occurrences is the Cherry Blossom Festival. In the last weeks of March, these sweet trees turn from buds to brilliant flowers and bring with them the promises of spring revival.

Also, check out the Kite Festival which takes place on the grounds of the Washington Memorial. The celebration includes entertainment, music, competitions, and dynamic kites. D.C. is a mecca of history and museums. From the Lincoln Memorial to the White House, the Smithsonian to the Kennedy Center, and the National Gallery of Art to the Ford’s Theatre, the Nation’s Capital is overflowing with culture, story, and endless exhibits to explore.

Many museums are free to visit too! City bus tours allow you to find your footing and some hidden gems. Ghost tours whisper secrets of the forefathers’ findings. Bike tours bring fresh air and scenes of greenery. Stroll along the Georgetown waterfront for views of the Potomac River. Pack a picnic for an afternoon on the National Mall. Stop for a picture at the notable Watergate Hotel.

Visit the Smithsonian’s National Zoo for the pandas and over one thousand other animals. Dining is dynamic; from savory bites to extravagant spreads by James Beard-awarded chefs, D.C. offers menus for the pickiest of palates to the most adventurous eaters.

Looking for a frosty pint? Try the Metropolitan Beer Trail to sample the city’s best at over 10 establishments. Then try the popular Georgetown Cupcake, a sweet the entire can indulge in. While the area can be busy, early March may provide some deals on hotel rates and travel expenses.

Big Bend National Park, TX

A photograph depicting Big Bend National Park in Texas, USA, with a focus on the Rio Grande and Santa Elena Canyon. The image captures the vast landscape of the park, featuring the river winding through the iconic canyon. The arid terrain, characteristic of the region, extends to the horizon.

Spring is the perfect season to visit this national park. It’s one of my favorite places to visit in March, and has become a popular destination for many reasons each season. Biking, hiking, river trips, and backcountry excursions are some of the offerings of the park. With over 150 miles of trails, it’s no wonder outdoor enthusiasts flock here.

Many also visit to see the extraordinary plant life. In March, bluebonnets, the state flower, enchant the park with their ravishing bloom, attracting travelers to the area. With diverse elevations comes distinct life. The park ranges from 1,800 feet to nearly 8,000 feet allowing for vibrant organisms, both plants and animals.

Stargazing is another attraction in Big Bend. The charcoal night skies allow the constellations and planets to dazzle even brighter.

Chicago, IL

A photograph featuring 'Cloud Gate,' also recognized as 'The Bean,' in Millennium Park, Downtown Chicago, Illinois, USA. The image captures the reflective sculpture against the urban backdrop. 'The Bean' is a prominent public artwork known for its polished, mirrored surface and distinctive elliptical shape.

Chicago’s blustery weather is slowly subsiding, just in time for the legendary St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Take the St. Patrick’s Day Clover Cruise for a first-hand look as the river waters transform to green making the city seem extra lucky.

During March, the three-day La Femme Dance Festival celebrates choreography crafted by Black/African Diaspora women. For more arts and culture, Chicago offers dynamic programming at numerous performance entities like the Lyric Opera, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Guarneri Hall, and the Goodman Theatre.

The House of Blues and Auditorium Theatre are spaces that host epic concerts, while the United Center boasts the biggest names in the entertainment business. Get a good laugh at The Second City, the birthplace of improv, the Annoyance Theatre, or The iO Theatre. These renowned establishments were all home to hysterical and now-famous individuals.

March marks the opening of the new Flyover experience at the Navy Pier; a multi-sensory presentation that takes you soaring through the city’s most iconic sites, attractions, and, of course, wind. Visit at the end of the month if you want to catch the White Sox season opener. Enjoy the fresh breezes while biking along Lake Michigan and take a tour of all the legendary sites. From the Bean to the Observational Deck Chicago takes excitement to new heights.

It may be bursting with entertainment, but since March is still considered the off-season, you can snag a steal on hotels and accommodations when you make your way to the Windy Coty this March.

St. Michaels, MD

An aerial view panorama capturing ships docked along the waterfront in St. Michaels, Maryland, situated in Chesapeake Bay. The image displays an array of vessels along the docks, showcasing maritime activity in the area.

Bustling in the summer months, St. Michael’s is a sleepy water town on Maryland’s Eastern shore. This destination is for anyone who wants a low-key spring getaway without all the tourists. A sprawling marina and southern hospitality add to the area’s charm. Victorian-style houses line the streets making for scenic strolls.

The St. Micheal’s Museum features local 19th-century history and detailed walking tours. At the Chesapeake Maritime Museum, view artifacts and exhibits. Locals are happy to share facts and tidbits about this historic town that “fooled the British.”

Oysters are still prime in March and Maryland is all about seafood! The food here is fresh, incredibly local, and made to please, with waterfront dining always in season. Sweet treats make their mark in mark as The Chocolate Crawl comes to town this month.

Local restaurants whip up desserts to make tastebuds sing. From fine dining to grille pubs, there are plenty of delicious dining experiences. Sample local brews at Eastern Shore Brewing to quench your thirst after a long day. Sip on Lyon Rum, the staple from Windon Distilling, or savor one of the 18 wines from St. Michael’s Winery.

Movie fan? Visit the Inn at Perry Cabin to see where Wedding Crashers was filmed. Inns and bed and breakfasts like the Brampton Inn or the Historic Inn at the Perry make for idyllic lodgings. Vacation rentals are popular too, with tempting rates in the early spring.

Aspen, CO

A photograph depicting the town of Aspen, Colorado. The image captures the town's surroundings, characterized by mountainous terrain and evergreen trees.

As the snow turns to slush and slowly slips into spring, Aspen is still bustling with winter activities.  Aspen is home to four world-class ski resorts, boasting over 330 unique trails combined. Slide through these paths at Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, and Aspen Highlands. Plus, tubing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice skating are available for those weary of the trails.

Après ski is officially in season, so events and social gatherings are ramping up. Resorts like Snowmass take adventure to another level with their Alpine Coaster. This mountain serves up concerts on the peaks, as well as professional competitions like the Town Race Series FIS Ski World Cup, and the Junior Freeride.

Other events like the Ullrhof Games make St. Patrick’s Day even more memorable. Photographers and short filmmakers unite in March for the NEPSA Awards. This event showcases videos and photos of mountain mayhem captured by local creators at the Wheeler Opera House.

Other non-snow activities include tours through the historical downtown area and perusing the Aspen Art Museum. Foodies can nosh at one of the 80 restaurants or splurge with the Chef and Somm’s Series. Sample Colorado whiskey at Stranahan’s or feel refreshed with a local brew and snacks from Aspen Brewing Company.

Cannon Beach, OR

A photograph capturing Cannon Beach with the ocean in Oregon, USA. The image depicts the expansive shoreline with the Pacific Ocean in the background. The beach features its characteristic sandy terrain, and waves can be seen along the coastline.

A coastal town with nature and iconic views, to say Cannon Beach is a scenic town is severely understated. Haystack Rock is one of the most recognized images of the area. It has even been featured in movies like The Goonies.

Tidepools surround this epic structure, providing homes for creatures like sea stars, anemones, and crabs. Nature abounds here, making it one of my favorite places in Oregon to visit, especially in March.

Tufted puffins call this town home and whale-watching season hits its peak in March. Book a tour or choose to watch the gray whales move through the salty sea from the shore. Beach walks are idyllic and dramatic, especially in misty fog. Nearby Oswald West State Park and Ecola State Park offer miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, and recreation—perhaps even views of the whales.

Find delicious pints in local breweries and attempt to tackle the North Coast Craft Beer Trail. Local coffee shops can perk you up while dozens of eateries can satiate your palette. Additionally, Cannon Beach is an art town boasting over 12 galleries and a walking art tour. Accommodations are plentiful, from bed and breakfasts to camping to inns and hotels, there is something cozy for every style.

Savannah, GA

An aerial photograph capturing the downtown skyline of Savannah, Georgia, along the Savannah River. The image provides a comprehensive view of the city's architectural landscape, featuring a mix of buildings and structures.

A gem on the Savannah River, this Georgia city is the southern hospitality benchmark. This city is flowering, and the humidity has yet to sweep through, making it more welcoming for guests. Enjoy a riverboat cruise for dinner or a simple sightseeing excursion.

Stroll along the riverwalk and through the neighborhoods to admire the unique Victorian architecture and influence. The cobblestone streets will transport you to another time. Dive into a decadent dinner or sip on a cocktail at a prohibition-style bar. Try a guided segway tour to experience the history and Civil War relics of the city.

Spooky ghost tours tell the tales of the town’s most horrid haunts. Or take a short drive to Tybee Island, the beach pocket of Savannah, to take advantage of the quiet shoreline and scrumptious seafood.

There are loads of museums, music, and theatres to satisfy your art itch. For extra incentives to visit, the Savannah Music Festival launches at the end of the month and the 200th St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes over the city mid-month.

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

A photograph capturing Red Rock Canyon against a clear sky. The image showcases the distinctive red rock formations and the arid desert landscape synonymous with the conservation area.

It’s a popular place, but March is slower for the Grand Canyon area. Fewer people mean better access to hikes, scenic vistas, and campsites, though the evening temperatures will be near freezing or colder! The North Rim may be snowy, but if not, flowers will be perking up in both the North and South regions. Regardless, the area is a stunning background for pictures and sensational moments.

The Canyon area has guided tours for trail amateurs and those interested in learning about the incredible carved ravines. Ranger information programs continue year-round. Additionally plane, helicopter, bus, or other vehicle tours offer an intimate glimpse at the canyons, providing breathtaking views. Experience the grandeur when you walk along the glass skywalk or cruise down the Colorado River on a boat excursion.

Take a detour to experience the Hoover Dam in its massive glory. Make it a unique experience on The Grand Canyon Train and Hotel, a restored engine that takes guests back in time to when the West was truly a wild wilderness.

Branson, MO

The Ozarks get hot in the summer, so Branson is a city at peak performance in March. With brisk spring air and endless musical acts to keep you entertained, Branson is a destination for friends or family. Country music has been ever-popular here and its melodies resound.

As the city is adjacent to three lakes, fishing, boating, and hiking are always in season. Cruise Table Rock Lake aboard the showboat Branson Belle and be delighted by musicians, comedians, and magicians while dining. Sample local wines and spirits, even some signature moonshine. Be thrilled at Dolly Parton’s Stampede with a four-course homestyle meal and a new lumberjack experience. Venture below the surface to explore the wonders of the caves at Talking Rocks Cavern.

Dine and splurge at one of the 100 restaurants and shops. Branson is also home to numerous golf courses, and with perfect tee-time weather, this sport can be easily played on a spectacular spring day. Boating is ideal any time of year and these coastal waters are legendary for providing plenty of fresh catches. Golf is always on the agenda in Florida and beach bonfires are the best way to warm up every evening (permits are required).

Live music is in abundance at many local establishments. Shopping and spa days are essential for relaxing in this beach town, while Harborwalk is a prime place for all activities, including a Buccaneer Pirate Cruise.

For foodies, the annual Mac and Cheese Festival is served in March. Sample specialty recipes on a quintessential dish and find your favorite. The town provides plenty of ways to stay from vacation rentals to resorts to camping. And, in March, you may just get lucky enough to snag a good deal, too!

An image capturing the cityscape of Dallas, Texas, characterized by prominent red hues. The photograph depicts the city skyline against a clear sky, with red-toned buildings standing out as key features.

The spring air makes this Lonestar State city a prime location to visit in March. Dallas is a hub of activity and culture. With two major airports, access to the city center is easy. Numerous attractions are sprinkled throughout the vibrant neighborhoods. The Dallas World Aquarium sits downtown while the expansive Dallas Zoo is near Bishops Arts.

Stroll around the area to discover unique shops and restaurants for every craving. Perot Museum of Nature and Science gives a glimpse of the universe and beyond. Klyde Warren Park is the center of outdoor concerts, movie nights, workout classes, and scores of activities for children. Even pack an old-fashioned picnic for an afternoon of leisurely family time.

Take a bike ride (or run) through White Rock Lake or enjoy the paved pathway of the Katy Trail. In the Arts District, find the Winspear Opera House, which is also home to the Texas Ballet Theatre, Wyly Theatre, and The Crow Collection of Asian Art.

There are scores of cocktail bars and nightclubs for those seeking evening thrills in the Uptown area while the Deep Ellum area is home to hipster-chic breweries and bites. Food tours allow you to sample all the cuisines, from fusion foods to southern staples. March welcomes the North Irish Festival and the St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival, adding extra reasons why Dallas is perfect in spring.
