Pull-throughs have a reputation as the stress-free site. You skip the backing in, the white-knuckle steering, and the audience of campers pretending not to watch. Site managers say that reputation is exactly why so many small disasters start there. These are the 13 things they keep running into.
The surprise is how ordinary the trouble is. It’s rarely a wrecked awning or a dramatic jackknife. It’s a few missing feet on a reservation, a tow car still hitched in a tight loop, or a slide-out quietly claiming the neighbor’s picnic table. And the first thing managers wish you knew is hiding in the word “pull-through” itself.
#1 – “Pull-Through” Describes the Shape of the Lane, Not the Size of Your Rig
The word “pull-through” gets treated like a size guarantee, and managers say that’s the first mistake. A site can be a straight, drive-through lane and still be shorter than a big fifth wheel plus the truck that hauls it. Hosts advise checking your RV against the actual site dimensions before you book.
Sites in the same loop often differ in length, and the short ones aren’t always labeled that way. That’s why office staff keep asking for your numbers. A site that looks huge in a photo can still come up a few feet short, and those few feet end up sticking out into the road.
But that’s nothing compared to the number managers say most people get wrong in #2…
#2 – The Length You Quote Is Probably Missing a Few Feet
“My RV is 30 feet” is only half the answer. When you reserve, staff want the size and type of rig. They also want to know whether you’re towing a trailer or passenger vehicle, with the length including the tongue hitch, and whether you want a full pull-through or a back-in. Leave out any of those and you can land in the wrong spot.
The classic mistake is quoting the box and forgetting the extras. A hitch, a bike rack, or a rear cargo carrier can add real length. Managers say the headache arrives later, when the rig is already sitting in the lane and the next arrival is waiting behind it.
- Measure the full rig, hitch included.
- Say whether a tow vehicle will stay attached.
And the next one is about a mistake that can start before you even reach the gate…
#3 – That Empty-Looking Site Isn’t Empty on Paper
Rolling in early feels harmless. But the previous guests may still be on the clock, and the site may not be cleaned or checked yet. Hosts suggest calling ahead if you’re running early. Staff can often fit you in if the site has already been “flipped,” and that one phone call changes the whole tone of your arrival.
The mistake managers hear about most is pulling in and unhooking before checking in. The advice is simple: never pull into a site and unhook without checking with the office first. Another party may have that exact pitch reserved, and a hookup that’s already done makes the fix awkward for everyone.
Worth Knowing
- An open-looking site may still belong to someone else until they check out.
- A quick call before arrival can turn an early roll-in into a welcome.
- Ask whether your site has been cleaned and checked yet.
- Check in first, unhook second.
Next up is a rule many parks treat as non-negotiable, and it hits pull-throughs hardest…
#4 – The Tow Car Gets Unhooked Before the Loop, Not After
Pull-through lanes are tight, and a towed vehicle makes the rig longer and harder to steer. You’re typically expected to unhook a dinghy before driving to your site. One roundup says managers at most parks treat this as non-negotiable, and want it done before you head for the site, not once you’re already there.
Why the fuss? A dinghy that’s still attached can’t be backed up easily if you misjudge a turn. That leaves you stuck mid-loop with a line forming behind you. A rig that blocks the lane can hold up every arrival after it.
But what managers say about your first thirty seconds on the site might surprise you more…
#5 – The Hookups Are Never Where You Hoped They’d Be
Utilities don’t care which side your door is on. The pedestal might sit a few feet behind your rear axle, or ahead of it, and hoses and cords only stretch so far. Walking the site first lets you judge how close the hookups really are.
Skip that walk and you end up repositioning three times. You also end up with a power cord stretched across the ground, or a sewer hose that falls short. Thirty seconds on foot can save ten minutes of reversing. Managers call it the cheapest trade in camping.
And then there’s the mistake that blocks the road for everyone else…
#6 – Stopping Short Leaves Your Tail Hanging in the Road
A pull-through only works if you actually pull through. Plenty of RVers stop the moment the door lines up with the picnic table. The result is a back end poking into the lane. The standard guidance is to pull into your site without blocking the road or crowding your neighbor.
One camper’s comment on a campground etiquette video said it plainly: pull your truck or toad all the way into the site and don’t partially block the road. There’s a safety side too. When rigs or gear spill into the road, it gets much harder for emergency vehicles or other big rigs to navigate the turns. That includes your tow vehicle, which belongs fully inside the site lines.
Quick Compare
- Pulled all the way in: the lane stays clear and the neighbors keep their space.
- Stopped at the picnic table: the tail pokes into the road and blocks the turn.
- Tow vehicle left in the lane: it can hold up the next arrival and anything larger behind it.
But that’s nothing compared to what a few inches of slide-out can cost you in #7…
#7 – Your Slide-Outs and Awnings Don’t Get Bonus Space
Every site has invisible borders, and managers say pull-throughs are where those borders get tested. There are no fences, just imaginary lines, and awnings and slide-outs shouldn’t cross them into a neighbor’s space. Sites sit close together, so a few extra inches matter.
The same goes for what’s under the awning. General etiquette is to stay on your side of the hookup and keep awnings or slide-outs from encroaching on the next site. Your outdoor setup counts as part of your footprint, and chairs, mats, and grills all take up room.
Wait until you hear what happens when someone arrives after dark in #8…
#8 – The After-Midnight Arrival Is the Loudest Minute in the Park
Pull-throughs are popular for late arrivals because there’s no backing in, so they attract the people rolling in after everyone is asleep. One RVer writing about camping near Acadia in Maine described the scene. Someone came in after midnight with a squealing hitch while his wife tried to guide him into the site and yelled his name. It became the campground story of the trip.
Headlights sweep across windows, brakes hiss, and doors slam. Managers say late arrivals are fine, but the noise is the problem. Quiet hours aren’t a suggestion for the rig that’s still pulling in. Many parks will tell you in advance which spots suit late arrivals.
Next, a habit that makes managers wince every single weekend…
#9 – The Open Row Makes Your Neighbor’s Site Look Like a Sidewalk
Pull-through sites often sit in long rows with open ground between them. That makes cutting across a neighbor’s pitch look like the quickest route to the bathhouse. It’s one of the most common complaints on RV forums and social media. The advice is to never use a campsite as a shortcut and to stay on marked paths and roads.
Managers say guests treat their own rented pitch like a temporary yard but forget the next one over is someone else’s. Some campers say they don’t mind, but plenty are bothered by people cutting through. A shortcut that saves you ten seconds can start a feud for the whole weekend. The kids and dogs are included in that rule.
Why It Stands Out
- There are no fences, so the only boundary is manners.
- A rented pitch is someone’s temporary living room.
- Marked paths exist so nobody has to guess.
- Kids and dogs follow the same route you do.
The next one is actually about the sky, and it’s more contentious than you’d think…
#10 – One Porch Light Can Erase a Whole Night Sky
Many people book an RV site to get away from city glare. Then the rig next door leaves a floodlight on all night. One camper called leaving outside lights on all night one of the most annoying things about camping. In open pull-through rows, that glare travels a long way.
Opinions differ, and some campers argue security lighting is a safety need. Many managers still lean toward softer options. One guide suggests soft, downward-facing lights and music at a volume only you can hear. A light you can’t turn off at bedtime is a light your neighbors will notice.
But the biggest hazard in the loop isn’t light at all, as the next entry shows…
#11 – Long, Straight Lanes Tempt Good Drivers to Speed
Pull-through loops are long and straight, and that’s exactly where drivers relax their foot. Managers say that’s the wrong place to relax. Campground speed limits sit low for a reason: kids ride bikes, dogs walk on leashes, and people set up gear right at the edge of the pavement.
A big rig can’t stop quickly, and its mirrors hide a lot. Pull-through lanes often leave little room beside the pavement, so a wandering child or dog ends up close to the wheels. Slow is the polite speed here, and the safe one. It also gives you time to line up the pitch.
Next comes the part of the stay people forget, and managers remember all too well…
#12 – Departure Morning Decides How the Next Guest’s Day Starts
Leaving a pull-through isn’t just hitching up. The next guests are often arriving the same day, and the last thing they want to find is a mess. Before you go, make a quick sweep of the site for personal items or debris. The rule of thumb is to leave the site the way you’d like to find it.
Details matter too. One guide notes it’s good practice to pull the awning in when you leave the campsite. Then comes the dump station. When others are waiting in line, move quickly and save the black-tank flush for your next stop. A long dump-station line often starts with one slow departure.
And the final entry might be the thing managers most wish they could say at the gate…
#13 – Most Pull-Through Trouble Is Really a Phone Call Nobody Made
Here’s the truth most managers share: a pull-through problem is almost always a communication problem. Staff can only match you to a site using the information you give them. A quick call with an honest rig length and a note about your tow vehicle beats any workaround at the gate. Parks that share their rules upfront also find that campers are more likely to follow them.
Plenty of RVers treat a pull-through as the premium pick, but some managers argue a well-sized back-in can be the smarter match for certain rigs. That’s an opinion, not a rule, but it’s worth asking about. The best site is the one that fits your actual rig, not the one with the best label. Asking costs one phone call.
At a Glance
- Rig type and size: give the full length, hitch included.
- Tow vehicle: say whether a trailer or passenger vehicle comes along.
- Site type: ask whether a full pull-through or a back-in suits you better.
- Arrival time: mention it if you’ll be late or early.
Most pull-through trouble is small and preventable. The rig is longer than quoted, the dinghy is still attached, or the tail sits in the road. Slide-outs creep, lights stay on, and the lane gets taken too fast. The common thread is that the hardest problems start before the wheels stop, with missing details at booking or skipped steps on arrival.
The easiest site in the park gets easy the same way everything else does: someone did the boring part first.
