5 Items Hotel Front Desk Clerks Say You Should Always Request at Check-In

Most travelers walk up to the front desk, hand over an ID, sign the folio, and head straight for the elevator without asking for anything extra. Yet hotel staff have said for years that a short, polite conversation at check-in can unlock small comforts and conveniences that guests never think to request. Every front desk agent in America has watched the same scene play out a thousand times, a guest walks up, hands over an ID, signs the folio, and disappears into the elevator without asking a single question, never learning that somewhere behind that counter sits a spare room with a better view, a quieter floor, or a fee they didn’t actually have to pay.[1]

These aren’t secret loopholes or complicated hacks. They’re simple, reasonable asks that front desk clerks say they wish more guests made, because in many cases the answer is already yes, it’s just waiting for the right question.

1. Extra Pillows or a Look at the Pillow Menu

Pillow preferences are one of the most common comfort requests hotels handle, yet plenty of guests never think to ask beyond what’s already sitting on the bed. Your average hotel can’t offer you the likes of Conrad Hotel Miami’s “pillow menu,” but most, if not all, should be able to swap animal down duvets and pillows for synthetic alternatives that tend to be easier on allergies.[2] Some properties go even further with curated options for firmness, fill type, and even scent.

Some hotels have pillow menus where you can choose from memory foam, down, hypoallergenic, or even body pillows, and a few places even offer a lavender-scented pillow for extra relaxation.[3] You can also simply ask for extra pillows, although typically your room will already have more than enough.[2] It costs nothing to ask, and if you struggle with allergies or sleep quality on the road, it’s one of the easiest upgrades available.

2. Chargers, Adapters, and Forgotten Personal Care Items

Leaving a phone charger or toothbrush at home used to mean a late-night run to a pharmacy. These days, many hotels keep a stocked closet behind the desk specifically for guests who forgot something. Many properties have a whole treasure trove of items you can request, including phone chargers, adapters, safety pins, umbrellas, Band-Aids, tampons, nail files, hair ties, lint rollers, razors, and even earplugs, with one concierge noting she’s even loaned out bowties and cufflinks.[4]

The trend has only grown more common industry-wide. If you forget something like a toothbrush, razor, or deodorant, the front desk often has spare personal care items available, and many properties keep small supplies such as toothpaste, lip balm, and nail files on hand, with brands like Hyatt and Kimpton known for keeping these extras available even though they aren’t placed in the room by default.[5] International travelers should also ask about plug adapters, since some hotels keep extra plug adapters on hand for travelers, available just by asking.[3]

Noise complaints are one of the most predictable problems in hotels, and front desk staff usually know exactly which rooms generate them. Hotels often have rooms with vastly different experiences based solely on location, so it’s worth asking for a room away from elevators, ice machines, and housekeeping closets to avoid noise disturbances throughout your stay.[6] This is a request agents can typically honor immediately, since room assignments aren’t locked in until you actually check in.

Something as simple as asking which floors tend to be calmest gives the agent permission to steer you away from known trouble spots, since every hotel has a floor that fields the most noise complaints, usually near a bar, ballroom, or ice machine, and staff know exactly which one it is but need permission to route guests elsewhere.[1] If natural light matters to you, mention that too. Don’t hesitate to specify if you prefer a room with morning sunlight or shade, since many hotels can accommodate specific location requests if you ask during check-in rather than waiting until you’re already settled into a less-than-ideal room.[6]

4. A Complimentary Upgrade Check

Asking about an upgrade doesn’t guarantee one, but front desk staff consistently say it’s worth the thirty seconds it takes to ask. One of the simplest yet most overlooked questions at check-in is whether complimentary upgrades are available, since hotels frequently have unsold premium rooms and front desk staff often have discretion to upgrade guests, especially exceptionally polite and friendly ones, which could result in a better view, more space, or additional amenities at no extra cost.[6] Loyalty status can improve your odds too. Loyalty program members should always mention their status during check-in, as this can increase upgrade chances.[6]

Timing and framing matter more than most guests realize. The best time to request a room upgrade is mid-to-late afternoon, when housekeeping has turned over more rooms and the front desk still has flexibility.[7] It also helps to mention if you’re celebrating something. If it’s your special day such as a birthday or anniversary, make sure to let the front desk know, as there are high chances of the staff offering a complimentary upgrade to help you celebrate the occasion.[8] Worth noting: policies vary by brand, and not every hotel guarantees free upgrades even for elite members, since Hilton’s rules show that almost half of their brands do not give free upgrades[9], so keep expectations realistic and requests low-key.

5. Early Check-In or Late Checkout

Few requests offer as much practical value for as little effort as asking about check-in and checkout flexibility. Standard check-in times exist mainly to allow housekeeping to prepare rooms, but if a room has already been cleaned and inspected, hotels may allow guests to access it earlier, and large chains often accommodate early arrivals when occupancy allows, though front desk staff can only release rooms early if they’re actually ready.[5]

The same logic applies on the other end of your stay. Late checkout is one of the simplest requests guests can make, and when occupancy is manageable, hotels often extend the departure time beyond the usual late-morning cutoff, with front desk staff sometimes allowing guests to remain an extra hour or two if housekeeping schedules permit, which is especially helpful for travelers with afternoon flights.[5] Both requests are essentially free, so there’s little downside to asking as soon as you check in rather than waiting until the morning you’re due to leave.

None of these five requests require special status, elite loyalty tiers, or aggressive negotiating. They’re simply things front desk staff are already equipped to offer, and in most cases they’re happy to help once a guest actually asks. A little courtesy goes a long way here too. The power of asking nicely is huge, and being specific about what you’re looking for, including mentioning a special occasion, genuinely helps.[4]

If there’s one habit worth building before your next trip, it’s simply speaking up at the desk instead of heading straight to the elevator. The extra pillow, the forgotten charger, the quieter room, the possible upgrade, and the flexible checkout time are all sitting right there behind the counter, waiting for someone to ask.
