Passport control used to be a fairly forgettable part of a trip to Europe. A quick look at your passport, maybe a stamp, and you were through. Since the EU’s Entry/Exit System reached full operation across its external borders, the experience for many visitors has changed.

Waits now vary a lot depending on the airport, the hour and how many booths are staffed. Some small habits can still make a real difference, and most of them are worth knowing before you leave home.

The EU’s Travel to Europe mobile application lets non-EU nationals pre-register their passport data and facial image, and provide trip details, within the 72 hours before reaching an EES border crossing point.[1] Use of the app is optional.[1] In theory, that moves some of the work away from the busiest part of the airport.

In practice, availability is patchy. As of August 2026 the app covered arrivals into Sweden and Portugal only, at a short list of airports.[2] Pilots with France, the Netherlands and Italy have been planned with Frontex, but none was open to travellers at that point.[2] Pre-registration also never replaces the fingerprint capture an officer does at the border,[2] so check whether your arrival airport supports it before you count on it.

Border queues aren’t constant through the day. There’s no reliable fixed waiting time, because waits move with the hour and with how many booths are staffed.[2] Off-peak arrivals clear far faster than the mid-afternoon long haul bank, when first time registrations pile up.[2]

Paris Charles de Gaulle shows how this works. Overnight flights from North America and Asia arrive between 06:00 and 10:00, so the queue has usually been building for two hours by then.[3] Summer adds pressure of its own, since Europe’s peak season typically runs from late June through August, and traffic at major gateways can double compared with winter.[4] If you have a choice of flights, a less crowded landing slot is one of the few things fully in your control.

The Holiday Extras travel advice suggests travelling with a cabin bag only, sitting near the front of the plane, and going straight to passport control once you’re through security, because duty free and coffee can wait.[5] The logic is simple. When a full aircraft lands, the people who reach the queue first face a much shorter line than those who arrive ten minutes later.

The numbers explain why position matters. The European Commission has reported average registrations of 70 seconds at full capacity.[6] That’s quick for one person, yet it’s slow across a full wide-body aircraft.[2] Knowing the steps also helps you move without fumbling: your passport is scanned, a live facial image is taken and, if you’re aged 12 or over and visa exempt, four fingerprints are normally captured.[7]

Some airports are trying to spread the workload. Paris Aéroport launched pre-enrolment pods at Terminal 2E in June 2026, where you can capture your passport, photo and fingerprints before reaching the officer.[3] Elsewhere, biometric data is captured at a self-service kiosk or staffed booth on first entry.[8] If you see a kiosk, it’s usually worth using it.

Fast Track lanes can also help, though with a caveat. Terminal 2E at Paris has Fast Track lanes, included for many business class and frequent flyer passengers, which move you to the front of the queue but don’t shorten the biometric registration itself.[3] It’s also worth remembering that fast track security lanes do not speed up passport control.[5] Whether a service exists at all depends on the airport, terminal and date.

The worst waits are real, but they’re not universal. Severe peak delays happen, though they’re not the normal wait at every airport.[7] On 1 July 2026, ACI EUROPE, IATA and A4E said some peak border control waits had reached up to five hours, with missed connections and passengers still queuing when gates closed.[7] For a summer connection through Paris, one travel guide suggests allowing at least three hours.[2]

Conditions also shift from one day to the next. Enforcement now varies by airport and can change day to day, so any specific queue figure is a snapshot rather than a guarantee.[5] Before you fly, check the airport’s border control page and your airline’s app.[2] The effort tends to pay off later too, because once you’re registered, later crossings are much faster.[3]
