American Express has introduced a new redemption path that allows holders of its Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred cards to move Reward Dollars straight into an American Express high-yield savings account at a one-to-one rate. The change, which also extends to certain business cardmembers, gives cash-back users a straightforward way to channel rewards into savings without converting points or chasing transfer bonuses. The option became available for consumer cards recently, while Graphite Business Cash Unlimited cardholders gained access to deposits into an Amex Business Checking account starting October 29.
New Redemption Paths for Consumer and Business Cardholders
Cardmembers with the Blue Cash Everyday or Blue Cash Preferred can now direct Reward Dollars into an eligible American Express high-yield savings account through the issuer’s website or by phone. The process requires an open high-yield savings account, though applicants can open one during redemption if needed. Deposits occur at full value, so $100 in Reward Dollars produces a $100 balance increase. Business cardmembers holding the Graphite Business Cash Unlimited receive a parallel option that routes rewards into an Amex Business Checking account. Both features operate without minimum redemption thresholds, which removes a common barrier for smaller reward balances. The moves keep rewards within the American Express ecosystem rather than requiring external transfers.
Strategic Push to Link Cards and Banking Products
The updates form part of American Express’s effort to deepen connections between its credit cards, rewards programs, and banking offerings. Company data showed U.S. consumer and small-business deposit balances rising 9 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2026, with most new deposits coming from existing cardmembers. Younger customers drive much of the growth, as Millennials and Gen Z account for more than half of high-yield savings accounts and roughly one-third of balances. Corey Timlin, head of consumer banking at American Express, noted that these trends shaped the decision to simplify reward-to-savings transfers. The company has not announced plans to let cash-back cardmembers convert Reward Dollars into Membership Rewards points, though officials indicated further integration between cards and banking remains possible. Automatic Reward Dollars deposits into consumer high-yield savings accounts are scheduled to begin in 2027, though details on amounts and frequency have not been released.
Earning Rates on the Eligible Cards
The two consumer cards deliver different levels of cash back that convert into Reward Dollars. The no-annual-fee Blue Cash Everyday focuses on everyday spending, while the Blue Cash Preferred, which carries a $95 annual fee after the first year, targets higher grocery and transit outlays.
| Category | Blue Cash Everyday | Blue Cash Preferred |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. supermarkets | 3% (up to $6,000/year, then 1%) | 6% (up to $6,000/year, then 1%) |
| U.S. gas stations | 3% (up to $6,000/year, then 1%) | 3% (uncapped in bonus tier) |
| Streaming subscriptions | 1% | 6% on select U.S. services |
| Transit | 1% | 3% |
| Other purchases | 1% | 1% |
The Graphite Business Cash Unlimited earns a flat 2 percent on eligible purchases with no cap. All three cards issue earnings as Reward Dollars that now qualify for the new bank deposit options.
Evaluating the High-Yield Savings Account Option
An American Express high-yield savings account carries no opening or monthly fees, with interest compounding daily and paid monthly. As of October 28 the account offered a 3.20 percent annual percentage yield, though the rate remains variable. Cardmembers who already maintain a competitive high-yield savings account elsewhere may still prefer statement credits followed by manual transfers. The new redemption choice does not increase the underlying value of Reward Dollars, which continue to redeem at face value. It does, however, provide added convenience for those building emergency funds, travel reserves, or other savings goals. Cardmembers retain the ability to redeem Reward Dollars as statement credits or at Amazon checkout if those routes better suit their needs. The expansion gives everyday cash-back users a practical bridge between spending rewards and banking products without added complexity.
