Copa Airlines has lengthened its Panama Stopover program from seven days to 15 days. Passengers connecting through the airline’s hub can now spend up to two weeks in the country at no added cost on their ticket. The move aims to convert routine transit travelers into visitors who explore beaches, rainforests, and cultural sites before continuing their journeys.
How the Extended Program Works
Travelers book the stopover directly on Copa’s website by selecting the multi-city or stopover option during the search process. They choose their origin, Panama as the intermediate point, and final destination, then select dates that allow up to 15 days on the ground. No separate ticket or surcharge applies for the extended stay. The program applies to passengers already routing through Tocumen International Airport, the carrier’s main hub. Those flying between North and South America or other regions served by Copa can insert the stop without changing the overall fare. The airline reports that the airport handles roughly 19 million passengers each year, many of whom previously passed through with little time to explore.
Why Panama Benefits from Longer Stays
Panama offers varied attractions within easy reach of the capital, including coastal areas, highland towns, and protected natural zones. The extended window gives travelers time to visit multiple regions rather than rushing through on a short layover. Copa and its tourism partners expect the change to draw 250,000 additional visitors in 2026. Local authorities view the program as a direct boost to the economy. Extended stays increase spending on lodging, meals, and activities while spreading visitors beyond the immediate airport area. The carrier has also placed an interactive display at Tocumen that helps passengers build sample itineraries of three, five, seven, or 15 days.
Comparison with Other Airline Stopover Offers
Several carriers operate similar programs to turn hubs into destinations. The following table shows typical durations offered by selected airlines.
| Airline | Maximum Stopover | Primary Hub |
|---|---|---|
| Copa Airlines | 15 days | Panama City |
| Icelandair | 7 days | Reykjavik |
| Turkish Airlines | Varies (often 7+ days with packages) | Istanbul |
| Qatar Airways | Varies (stopover packages available) | Doha |
Copa’s new length stands out among these options. The longer allowance gives passengers more flexibility without requiring a separate ticket purchase.
Practical Details for Travelers
Copa participates in the Star Alliance, so passengers can credit flights to partner programs such as United MileagePlus. Those holding elite status or seeking to earn miles on the journey can add their frequent-flyer number at booking. Hotel options range from urban properties in Panama City to resorts farther afield, many of which accept major loyalty currencies. The change reflects a broader industry pattern of airlines promoting their hub cities. Copa’s chief executive, Pedro Heilbron, noted that the program works with government and industry partners to strengthen tourism promotion and support Panama’s economy. Travelers already planning routes through Panama can now treat the connection as an opportunity for a short vacation. The extended stopover requires only a simple adjustment to the booking process and adds no extra airfare.
