South Africa’s Karoo region presents a stark contrast in results when researchers search for signs of one of the world’s smallest wild cats. A single biologist working alone collected just four black-footed cat scat samples over more than a year. Two trained detection dogs located hundreds of samples in only a few months, opening new possibilities for non-invasive study of the nocturnal species.
Why Black-Footed Cats Remain Hard to Find
Black-footed cats spend daylight hours concealed in burrows and become active only after dark. Their small size and cryptic habits make direct observation rare. Traditional tools such as camera traps often fail to capture useful data on these predators, while methods that involve trapping or collaring raise ethical and practical concerns.
Researchers therefore turn to indirect evidence. Scat provides genetic material that can reveal population details without disturbing the animals. The challenge lies in locating enough samples amid similar droppings left by other small carnivores in the same habitat.
Trained Dogs Change the Search
Michelle Marie Schroeder works with Canines for African Nature and relies on two German Shorthaired Pointers named Lyka and Sebala. The dogs are conditioned to recognize the specific scent of black-footed cat scat and signal a find by lying down and staying still. This passive alert allows Schroeder to collect the sample safely and accurately.
Schroeder noted that she probably would not have found more than 90 percent of the scats without the dogs. She also observed that the animals distinguish the target samples far more reliably than a human searcher can manage in the field.
Clear Gains in Sample Collection
The difference in output is striking. Human effort alone yielded four samples across more than twelve months. The same researcher, assisted by the dogs, obtained hundreds of usable samples within a much shorter period. These additional finds supply the genetic material needed for ongoing monitoring programs.

Potential Reach Beyond One Species
The same scent-detection approach has been applied to other elusive mammals whose signs are equally difficult for people to locate. Pangolins, for example, leave sparse and easily overlooked traces in their habitats. Dogs trained for scat or other biological material can extend the same efficiency to these species and reduce reliance on more invasive survey techniques.
Hal Brindley of the University of Cape Town’s Institute for Communities and Wildlife in Africa has noted that studying black-footed cats without trapping or collaring is extremely difficult. He added that common non-invasive tools such as camera traps frequently prove ineffective, underscoring the value of any method that reliably supplies genetic samples.
The success recorded in the Karoo illustrates how specialized canine skills can fill gaps that persist even after years of conventional fieldwork. Continued refinement of these partnerships may allow researchers to gather comparable data on additional secretive species while keeping disturbance to a minimum.
