Frontier Airlines has announced plans to begin nonstop flights from Orlando to three Colombian cities later this year. The move marks the Denver-based carrier’s first service to the continent and fills gaps left by the earlier collapse of Spirit Airlines. The routes target strong demand for affordable travel options between Florida and Colombia.
Details of the New Service
The airline will operate daily flights to Medellin starting December 10. Service to Bogota begins December 14 with six weekly flights initially, increasing to daily operations after March 6, 2027. Weekly flights to Cartagena start December 19. All three routes depart from Orlando International Airport. These frequencies give travelers consistent options for leisure and business trips. Frontier emphasized the routes as a response to unmet demand for low-cost international travel in the region.
Routes Previously Operated by Spirit
Each of the new flights revives service once provided by Spirit Airlines before its shutdown. Spirit had built a notable presence in Colombia as a leading ultra-low-cost carrier to South America. Its exit created an opening that Frontier is now stepping into with similar budget pricing. Frontier executives have described a measured approach to absorbing former Spirit markets. Chief Executive James Dempsey noted in July that opportunities remain to add more of those routes over the next year or two.
Additional Context for Travelers
The announcement arrives shortly after Frontier confirmed its full exit from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport next month. The carrier continues to adjust its network while focusing on high-demand leisure routes. Tyri Squyres, Frontier’s vice president of public and consumer affairs, stated that the airline sees strong potential in offering affordable flights between Orlando and Colombia. The new service provides budget-conscious passengers with direct access to popular destinations including the capital and coastal areas. Travelers planning trips should monitor schedules closely as frequencies adjust in early 2027. The expansion signals continued competition among low-cost carriers on international leisure routes from Florida.
