JetBlue has secured the takeoff and landing rights that Spirit Airlines once used at LaGuardia Airport. The acquisition follows Spirit’s shutdown in May and the subsequent liquidation of its assets. The New York-based carrier can now add as many as 12 daily roundtrips from the airport, subject to final approvals.

Slot Acquisition Details

The rights became available after Spirit ended all flights on May 2. JetBlue confirmed the win this week, with CNBC reporting the development first. Court and regulatory approval remain necessary before any new flights can begin. The slots represent scarce resources at one of the nation’s busiest airports. JetBlue had reduced its LaGuardia presence in recent years because of high operating costs. The airline shifted most of its New York operations to John F. Kennedy International Airport as a result.

Interest in Marine Air Terminal

JetBlue has already signaled interest in relocating operations to Terminal A, known as the Marine Air Terminal. The 1940 structure once served Pan Am’s flying boats and currently sits unused for commercial service. Spirit had been the sole airline operating there before its closure. A move to the terminal would deliver meaningful cost savings for JetBlue. The carrier currently uses the larger, modern Terminal B, which includes premium lounges. Terminal A offers a simpler facility that aligns with JetBlue’s goals for controlled expenses at LaGuardia.

Expansion Timeline and Routes

JetBlue expects to launch additional flights in 2027 if approvals are granted. The airline is still evaluating specific uses for the new rights. Industry analyst Robert Mann anticipates a focus on established markets. “It is a relatively low-cost facility,” Mann said. “It’s a way of staying at LaGuardia, which is a preferred airport. And it’s a way of making the credit card portfolio perform by having operations at both Kennedy and LaGuardia.” Possible destinations include several Florida cities along with routes to upstate New York points such as Albany. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport, will play a central role in any terminal decision. Planned renovations to the terminal’s concourse and gates add another layer to the discussions.

Impact on Travelers and Operations

The changes could reshape JetBlue’s New York network over time. Passengers may eventually see more flight options from LaGuardia alongside the carrier’s existing service to Nantucket, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. A dedicated presence in the historic terminal would also create a distinct JetBlue-branded facility at the airport. The Port Authority continues to oversee facility upgrades while weighing JetBlue’s proposal. Stakeholders including regulators, the airline, and airport management must align on the next steps before service expands.
