United Airlines is simplifying its MileagePlus Premier status program by removing flight segments as a qualification metric starting in 2027. The Chicago-based carrier will rely solely on Premier Qualifying Points, or PQPs, which are earned through spending on flights and certain co-branded credit cards. This marks the second major adjustment to the loyalty program this year and shifts the focus more explicitly toward revenue generation rather than flight volume. ([1])
The End of a Dual-Track System
Until now, MileagePlus members could qualify for Silver, Gold, Platinum or 1K status through two paths. One relied entirely on PQPs accumulated from ticket purchases and card spending. The other combined a lower PQP total with a set number of Premier Qualifying Flights, or PQFs. Beginning in 2027, the second option disappears entirely.
United executives described the move as a way to create a single, consistent standard that members can track across both flying and card activity. The change eliminates the need for last-minute “segment runs” that some travelers used to pad their flight counts at year-end. Flights on United Express regional jets will still count toward a separate minimum of four United-operated flights required for any Premier status, but partner flights will not.
Higher Bar for Top-Tier 1K
Requirements for Silver, Gold and Platinum remain unchanged at 6,000, 12,000 and 18,000 PQPs respectively. Reaching 1K, however, becomes more demanding. Members will need 32,000 PQPs instead of the current 28,000, an increase of roughly 14 percent. Those who previously mixed segments and spending will face an even steeper climb, needing about 45 percent more PQPs than before.
The airline is also offering a modest head start for existing elite members who hold qualifying United credit cards. Silver members will receive 300 PQPs at the start of 2027, Gold members 600, Platinum 900 and 1K members 1,600. New cardholders who apply by the end of this year can receive the same deposit.
Who Gains and Who Adjusts
Travelers who already earn status primarily through spending will see little immediate difference, aside from the higher 1K threshold. United has indicated that the majority of members already qualify this way. Those who relied heavily on flight segments will need to increase their out-of-pocket spending or turn to credit-card earning to close the gap.
United’s loyalty chief noted that the previous system had become an outdated relic and that the airline no longer felt comfortable rewarding volume alone. The updated rules align United more closely with competitors that have long emphasized dollars spent on air travel and co-branded cards.
Earning PQPs Under the New Rules
Members continue to earn one PQP for every dollar spent on United flights. Several co-branded cards also award PQPs on everyday purchases, subject to annual caps that vary by card. Additional PQPs can come from certain post-booking upgrades and select partner flights at reduced rates.
The changes take effect for members working toward 2028 status. United has positioned the overhaul as a clearer, more predictable path that rewards consistent engagement with the airline and its financial products.
