Booking a vacation rental is a bit of a trust exercise. You’re handing over a chunk of money based on a handful of curated photos and a handful of stranger reviews, then hoping the place matches what you saw online. Most of the time it works out fine, but every so often the reality behind that front door tells a very different story than the listing did.
The tricky part is knowing which red flags are minor annoyances and which ones mean you should turn around, call the host or the platform, and find somewhere else to stay. Some issues are cosmetic. Others point to safety risks, sanitation failures, or outright deception that no amount of charm can fix.
1. No visible smoke detectors or carbon monoxide alarms
Walk in, look up, and check the walls near sleeping areas. If there’s no smoke detector in sight, or the ones present are missing batteries or clearly disconnected, that’s not a small oversight. Carbon monoxide alarms matter just as much, especially in properties with gas appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages, since CO poisoning has no smell or color to warn you.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has repeatedly flagged carbon monoxide exposure as a serious risk in short-term lodging, particularly in units with poorly maintained heating systems. A missing detector isn’t just a code violation in many jurisdictions, it’s a sign the host may be cutting corners elsewhere too, on things you can’t see as easily, like electrical wiring or gas line maintenance.
2. Locks that don’t actually lock
Test every door and window lock the moment you arrive, before you even unpack. A front door that doesn’t latch properly, a sliding lock that’s been painted over, or windows on a ground floor that won’t secure at all should end the stay right there, no matter how nice the kitchen looks.
This isn’t paranoia, it’s basic personal safety in a space where you have no idea who else has a key or access code from a previous booking. Reputable hosts on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo are expected to maintain working locks as part of their listing standards, and a failure here often signals the property isn’t being managed with much oversight at all.
3. Signs of pest infestation
Droppings along baseboards, chewed wiring, small dark stains on mattress seams, or a sweet musty smell in the bedroom are all classic indicators of pests, whether that’s rodents, roaches, or bed bugs. Bed bugs in particular have made a well-documented comeback in shared lodging over the past several years, and they travel home in luggage far more easily than most guests realize.
One or two stray insects can happen anywhere and don’t necessarily mean disaster. However, visible nests, a strong ammonia-like odor, or multiple signs across different rooms point to a persistent, ongoing problem rather than a one-time fluke. At that point, the honest move is to document everything with photos and leave before you unpack a single bag.
4. A property that looks nothing like its photos
Some cosmetic differences are normal, since lighting and camera angles flatter almost anything. But when the actual unit is a different size, missing advertised amenities like a pool or hot tub, or located in a noticeably different neighborhood than what was shown, that crosses from minor discrepancy into misrepresentation.
This kind of bait-and-switch listing has become common enough that Airbnb and other major platforms now offer guest refund guarantees specifically for cases where the property doesn’t match its description. Consumer protection groups have also flagged rental scams as a growing concern in the short-term rental space, so a drastic mismatch between photos and reality is worth reporting, not just tolerating.
5. Visible mold or persistent musty odors
A faint basement smell is one thing, but dark speckled patches on bathroom ceilings, warped baseboards, or a heavy musty odor that hits you the second you walk in are different territory entirely. Mold exposure has been linked by the Environmental Protection Agency to respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and worse outcomes for anyone with asthma or a compromised immune system.
Bathrooms without proper ventilation, water-damaged ceilings near air conditioning units, and window sills with black growth are the areas worth checking first. If mold is spreading rather than contained to a small easily explained spot, that’s a maintenance failure that’s been ignored for a while, and it’s reasonable to assume other upkeep has been neglected too.
6. A host who is unreachable or evasive about problems
Every rental has occasional hiccups, a broken dishwasher, a Wi-Fi outage, a stuck thermostat. What separates a manageable issue from a genuine red flag is how the host responds when you reach out. If messages go unanswered for hours during an active emergency, or the host gives vague, dismissive answers about safety concerns you’ve raised, that unresponsiveness itself becomes the bigger problem.
Short-term rental platforms generally expect hosts to respond to urgent issues quickly, and most have built-in messaging systems specifically so there’s a documented record if things go wrong. A host who disappears when something matters, or who pressures you to handle a serious issue yourself rather than fixing it, is telling you plainly how little support you’ll get for the rest of the stay.
Trusting your instincts matters just as much as checking these six things off a list. A rental that feels wrong within the first ten minutes rarely improves by hour two. Taking clear photos, contacting the platform immediately, and requesting a refund or rebooking protects both your money and your trip, and it’s a far better outcome than trying to make the best of a place that was never safe to begin with.
