The third-quarter bonus categories took effect on July 1 and run through September 30. Cardholders who activate in time can earn 5% cash back or 5 points per dollar on up to $1,500 in combined spending across the selected categories before the rate drops to 1%.

Gas prices remain elevated in many regions, and more drivers are turning to electric vehicles for longer trips. The return of both gas stations and EV charging as bonus categories gives cardholders a direct way to offset those costs during peak road-trip season. Transit also joins the list for the first time, covering public transportation, tolls, and parking garages that travelers often encounter in cities.
Live entertainment rounds out the group, aligning with summer concerts, festivals, and sporting events that frequently draw visitors from out of town. United Way appears as the quarterly charity option, allowing donors to earn bonus rewards on contributions to local nonprofits. Together the categories target spending patterns common among travelers without requiring major changes in routine.

Cardholders earn the elevated rate on purchases that fall into any of these five areas:

The 5% rate applies only after activation and only on the first $1,500 in combined spending across all bonus categories each quarter. After that threshold, earnings revert to the standard 1% rate on those same purchases.
How to Activate Before the Deadline
Activation must be completed by September 14 to qualify for the full bonus period. The process takes only a minute through the Chase website or mobile app. Cardholders enter their last name, the last four digits of the card, and billing ZIP code, then confirm the selection.
Those with multiple Freedom or Freedom Flex cards should register each one separately. A confirmation email arrives after successful activation, and keeping a screenshot provides a simple record in case of any later questions. Missing the deadline means forgoing the 5% rate for the entire quarter.

Travelers who frequently rent cars, use rideshares, or rely on public transit in destination cities stand to gain the most. The transit category’s broad definition means even airport parking or highway tolls can qualify during the quarter.
