Carnival Cruise Line has replaced its long-standing VIFP Club loyalty program with a new system called Carnival Rewards. The change took effect Tuesday and shifts the focus from days spent at sea to dollars spent on board and with the line. Existing members now face a two-year qualification window instead of lifetime status in most cases, though the company has provided some transition protections for prior tier holders.
Shift From Days to Dollars
The former program awarded status solely based on the number of cruise days accumulated, regardless of spending. The new structure introduces two parallel tracks: Carnival Rewards points earned through purchases and Status Qualifying Stars that determine tier level. Both tracks rely primarily on spending, with three points or stars awarded for every dollar spent on eligible items such as fares, drinks, specialty dining, excursions, gratuities, and certain casino activity. This approach aligns Carnival more closely with airline programs and rewards higher spenders more quickly. Frequent but low-cost cruisers who previously climbed tiers through volume alone now need greater outlays to maintain or advance their standing. The line has noted that the system also delivers rewards sooner, allowing points to be redeemed for onboard extras or future sailings from the first cruise onward.
Earning and Redeeming Rewards Points
Carnival Rewards points can be used immediately for a wide range of extras once earned. Examples include a Swedish massage at the spa for 13,499 points or a frozen piña colada for 1,357 points. Points also apply toward full or partial payment for future cruises. The redemption value currently equates to roughly one percent back on spending, though rates can vary by sailing and demand. Additional points come from leftover casino points at the end of a cruise and from purchases made with the new Barclays-issued Carnival Rewards Mastercard. The card replaced the previous Carnival World Mastercard, with existing holders automatically transitioned. Dynamic pricing means the exact points required for any given item will fluctuate over time.
Status Tiers and Qualification Rules
Four tiers determine priority benefits and perks. Qualification occurs through Status Qualifying Stars earned over a two-year period, after which status lasts for the remainder of that period plus the next two years.

Transition Protections for Existing Members
Carnival has extended prior VIFP status through January 1, 2029, for members who held it as of August 31, 2026. Diamond-level members from the old program retain that tier for life, a concession made after significant feedback from longtime customers. A separate Milestone Recognition Program also awards bonus points, special cards, coins, and onboard credit at 50-day, 100-day, and higher cruising milestones. The overhaul affects millions of past and future Carnival passengers by altering how status and rewards are earned and retained. Many regular cruisers will need to adjust their spending patterns or accept lower tiers in coming years, while higher spenders and gamblers may reach benefits faster than before.
