Credit cards that charge a modest annual fee continue to attract travelers seeking meaningful rewards without premium pricing. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card both carry a $95 fee and target applicants with credit scores of 670 or higher. Updated valuations from July 2026 show clear differences in bonus offers, protections, and everyday earning power that favor one card for the majority of users.
Welcome Bonuses Set Different Starting Points
The Sapphire Preferred currently provides 100,000 bonus points after $5,000 in spending within the first three months. At a July 2026 valuation of 2.05 cents per point, that offer equals roughly $2,050 in potential travel value. The Venture Rewards issues 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in spending during the same period. Those miles are valued at 1.85 cents each, producing a maximum of about $1,388 when transferred to airline and hotel partners. The higher Chase bonus and stronger per-point valuation give new cardholders an immediate edge. Both offers remain among the strongest available for cards in this fee range.
Travel Protections and Everyday Perks
Both cards waive foreign transaction fees and provide a $120 statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck applications every four years. The Sapphire Preferred adds primary auto rental coverage, trip delay reimbursement up to $500 per traveler after 12 hours, and trip cancellation coverage up to $10,000 per person. It also includes baggage delay coverage of $100 per day for up to five days. The Venture Rewards supplies secondary rental car coverage along with travel accident insurance. The Sapphire Preferred further offsets its annual fee with a $100 yearly hotel credit through Chase Travel and includes a complimentary year of Apple TV plus a DoorDash DashPass membership through the end of 2027. These extras expand the practical benefits beyond basic insurance.
Earning Power and Redemption Flexibility
The Venture Rewards awards 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, then 2 miles on everything else. The Sapphire Preferred earns 5 points per dollar on travel through Chase Travel, 3 points on dining, gas, electric vehicle charging, select streaming services, and online groceries, plus 2 points on other travel purchases. Chase points can be transferred to airline and hotel partners or redeemed through Chase Travel at up to 1.75 cents each via Points Boost. Capital One miles transfer to more than 15 partners at a 1:1 ratio or redeem at a fixed 1 cent each for travel. Chase’s broader bonus categories and higher transfer values give it the advantage for most spending patterns.
Which Card Fits Most Travelers
The Sapphire Preferred generally provides greater overall value through its larger welcome bonus, stronger travel protections, and more versatile earning categories. Cardholders who prioritize simple flat-rate redemptions and minimal complexity may still prefer the Venture Rewards. For the majority of travelers focused on maximizing rewards and protections, the Chase option stands out as the clearer choice in 2026.
