Travel costs continue to climb in 2026, and many cardholders are looking for reliable ways to offset expenses without overhauling their spending habits. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card stands out because its structure rewards common purchases like hotels, flights, dining, and even vacation rentals at rates that accumulate quickly. For those who travel a few times a year, the card鈥檚 combination of credits, insurance protections, and point multipliers can turn routine bookings into meaningful savings on future trips.
Current Welcome Offer Sets a Strong Starting Point
New applicants can earn 75,000 bonus points after meeting a $5,000 spending requirement in the first three months. At recent valuations, that bonus equates to roughly $1,500 in travel value, though transfers to airline and hotel partners can stretch it further. The offer remains attractive for both new users and those evaluating whether the card fits ongoing needs. The points themselves transfer at favorable ratios to major programs, giving flexibility that many other cards lack. Cardholders who already hold the Sapphire Preferred often keep it active precisely because the ongoing benefits compound with the initial bonus rather than replacing it.
Annual Hotel Credit Offsets the Fee Immediately
Each account year brings a $100 statement credit for hotel stays booked through the Chase Travel portal. That single credit covers the card鈥檚 $95 annual fee and leaves a small surplus before any points are considered. The same portal bookings earn 5 points per dollar, creating an additional layer of return on the same transaction. Users who book independent or boutique properties tend to see the strongest results. Major hotel chains sometimes treat portal reservations as third-party bookings, which can limit loyalty points and elite benefits. Calling the property after booking or adding a loyalty number at check-in occasionally works, yet many travelers reserve the credit for non-chain options to avoid complications.
Travel Insurance and Rental Protections Add Quiet Value
Airfare booked through the portal or directly earns 2 points per dollar, while portal bookings reach 5 points per dollar. Beyond the earning rate, the card automatically provides trip delay coverage up to $500 per ticket after a 12-hour delay and baggage delay reimbursement up to $100 per day for five days when bags are delayed six hours or more. These protections apply to the cardholder and immediate family. Rental car coverage works similarly. Paying with the card waives the rental company鈥檚 collision damage waiver and supplies primary insurance for theft and damage. Gas and electric vehicle charging earn 3 points per dollar, making the card useful for road trips without requiring special planning.
Dining and Delivery Categories Build Steady Balances
Restaurants earn 3 points per dollar whether the meal is eaten in or taken out. The card also includes a complimentary DashPass membership through at least the end of 2027, which removes delivery fees on orders above $12 and adds a monthly $10 credit on select non-restaurant purchases. These categories accumulate points on everyday spending that many travelers already do.
When Other Cards Deliver Clearer Advantages
The Sapphire Preferred earns only 1 point per dollar on purchases outside its bonus categories. Cards with flat-rate rewards or targeted bonuses often outperform it on groceries, general retail, or specific airline and hotel spending. United cardholders, for example, may prefer their cobranded card for flights to secure free checked bags. Loyal hotel guests sometimes choose brand-specific cards to protect elite status and earn higher point rates on stays. What matters now is matching the card to actual spending patterns rather than defaulting to a single piece of plastic. Travelers who review their last few months of charges can quickly see where the Sapphire Preferred adds the most lift and where another card would serve better. The card continues to justify its fee for many users who route travel, dining, and rental expenses through its bonus categories. Those who treat it as one tool among several tend to extract the most consistent value over time.
