The Chase Sapphire Preferred has held its position as a leading entry point into travel rewards for more than 16 years, even as many competing cards have raised fees or altered their structures. A recent refresh has added new benefits while preserving the card’s longstanding $95 annual fee. This combination continues to draw attention from travelers who want meaningful value without committing to premium pricing right away.

The Limited-Time 100,000-Point Offer Sets a Strong Starting Point

A welcome bonus of 100,000 points after $5,000 in spending within the first three months stands out as one of the card’s strongest recent incentives. This offer has appeared only a handful of times in the card’s history, making the current window notable for new applicants. Meeting the requirement typically involves routine purchases such as groceries, fuel, and recurring bills that many households already incur. Those points carry substantial value when redeemed for travel. At current valuations, the bonus alone can cover more than $2,000 in flights or hotel stays booked through Chase Travel. The spending threshold averages roughly $1,667 per month over three months, a pace that remains achievable for many without unusual effort.

Flexible Redemption Options Suit Both Beginners and Growing Users

Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned on the Sapphire Preferred can be used in straightforward or advanced ways. Booking directly through the Chase Travel portal requires no special knowledge beyond what most people already use on typical booking sites. Points apply at a baseline value of one cent each, with select options reaching 1.5 cents through the Points Boost feature. For those ready to explore further, transfers to 14 airline and hotel partners expand the possibilities. Programs such as United MileagePlus, World of Hyatt, and Air France-KLM Flying Blue accept points at a 1:1 ratio in most cases, with Hyatt transfers at 4:3. This flexibility allows the same points balance to support domestic flights, resort stays, or longer international trips depending on the user’s goals and research.

Valuable Perks Offset the Modest Annual Fee

The $95 fee remains unchanged since the card’s introduction, yet recent additions have increased its practical return. A $100 annual hotel credit through Chase Travel can fully cover the cost with a single qualifying stay. Cardholders also receive a credit of up to $120 for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or Nexus applications every four years. Additional benefits include a one-year subscription to Apple TV+ and Apple Music, trip cancellation and interruption coverage, and a complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership through the end of 2027. Monthly DoorDash credits of up to $10 on eligible orders further add to the card’s everyday utility. These features deliver tangible savings without requiring the higher fees common on premium travel cards.

Everyday Earning Rates Support Steady Point Accumulation

Beyond the welcome bonus, the Sapphire Preferred earns points across categories that align with typical spending patterns. Five points per dollar apply to travel booked through Chase Travel, Lyft rides through September 2027, and qualifying Peloton purchases. Three points per dollar cover dining, gas, electric vehicle charging, select streaming services, online grocery purchases, and stays at vacation rental brands such as Airbnb and Vrbo. Two points per dollar apply to other travel purchases, with one point on remaining spending. At an average point value of 2.05 cents, these rates translate into effective returns ranging from roughly two to more than ten cents per dollar spent in bonus categories. The broad definitions of travel and dining help capture real-world expenses without narrow restrictions.

The 5/24 Rule Gives New Users a Practical Advantage

Chase applies an informal guideline that generally limits new approvals once an applicant has opened five or more credit card accounts across all issuers in the prior 24 months. Starting with the Sapphire Preferred allows travelers to secure a Chase product before other cards fill those slots. This sequencing matters because the rule can delay access to additional Chase cards later in a rewards journey. Many travelers discover the value of Chase products only after they have already reached the threshold with other issuers. Beginning here preserves future options while delivering immediate benefits that do not require extensive prior experience with points programs. The Chase Sapphire Preferred continues to demonstrate that a card can maintain relevance through consistent value rather than frequent reinvention. Its combination of accessible earning, flexible redemptions, and modest cost positions it as a durable entry point for those building a rewards strategy over time.
