Some airlines vanish so completely that the name alone brings back a smell, a color, or a snack. Families who flew them in the decades before the big mergers often still remember the planes. The tray tables and the paint jobs stuck with them as much as the destinations did.

“Elite” is a playful word here, because flying then wasn’t always glamorous or cheap. Still, these seven carriers each left a real mark on aviation history, and they’re all gone as independent brands. Here’s a look back at what made them memorable.

Pan Am

Pan American World Airways started in 1927 and became the best-known symbol of international travel for much of the twentieth century. It flew the first commercial Boeing 747 service, a New York to London route in January 1970. For many families, the blue globe logo meant a trip abroad.

The airline stopped operating on December 4, 1991, after years of financial strain. The 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, is widely cited as a heavy blow to its reputation in its final years. If you flew it as a kid, you flew one of the great names of aviation.

TWA traced its roots to 1925 and was shaped for decades by Howard Hughes, who took control of the company in the 1930s. It was a major transcontinental and transatlantic carrier. Many Americans remember it for its red-accented livery and its hub in St. Louis.

Its most visible legacy may be the Eero Saarinen designed terminal at New York’s JFK Airport, which opened in 1962. That building reopened in 2019 as the TWA Hotel, so you can still walk through a piece of the airline’s world. American Airlines took over TWA’s assets in 2001, and the TWA name disappeared from the skies that year.

Eastern Air Lines

Eastern began in the 1920s and grew into one of the largest U.S. airlines, especially along the East Coast and to Florida. For many families, a vacation meant boarding an Eastern jet bound for Florida. The airline also ran the popular Eastern Air Shuttle between New York, Boston, and Washington.

Labor disputes and bankruptcy brought it down, and it ceased operations in January 1991. The shuttle business was sold in 1989 and briefly became the Trump Shuttle. If your childhood trips included Florida theme parks in the 1970s or 80s, Eastern may well have been your ride.

Braniff International

Braniff was founded in 1928 and based in Dallas. In the mid 1960s it launched a bold campaign called “The End of the Plain Plane,” painting aircraft in bright solid colors. Designer Alexander Girard created interiors for the airline, and Emilio Pucci designed uniforms.

That sense of style made Braniff one of the most talked about airlines of its day. It stopped flying on May 12, 1982, after financial troubles worsened in the years following deregulation. Today it’s remembered more for its looks than anything else, and that’s not a small thing.

Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA)

PSA started in 1949 in California and became famous for the smile painted on the nose of its aircraft. It focused on short hops along the West Coast, which made it a regular choice for families heading between cities like San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The cheerful branding was hard to forget.

USAir acquired PSA in the late 1980s, and the brand was folded away by 1988. Anyone who watched that grinning jet taxi toward the gate probably still remembers it. It proved that a little personality could make a short flight feel like part of the trip.

People Express

People Express launched in 1981 from Newark, just after the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 opened the market to new competition. It became known for rock bottom fares and a no-frills approach, with fees for extras like checked bags and onboard refreshments. That sounds ordinary today, but it was a striking idea at the time.

The airline grew fast, then ran into trouble after expanding aggressively, including buying Frontier Airlines. It was absorbed into Continental in 1987. For families on a budget, it was a glimpse of how air travel would eventually change for everyone.

Northwest Airlines

Northwest began in 1926 as Northwest Airways and built hubs in Minneapolis, Detroit, and Memphis. It was known for its red tails and strong service to Asia, and it carried the name Northwest Orient for years before dropping “Orient” in 1979. Many Midwestern families have fond memories of flying it.

Delta announced the purchase in 2008, and the two airlines operated under a single certificate by the end of 2009. Northwest’s final flights wrapped up in early 2010, closing out more than 80 years of service. Its legacy lives on through Delta’s hubs in those same cities.

These seven airlines came from different eras and served different travelers, but each shaped how people remember flying. Some were glamorous, some were playful, and some simply got families where they needed to go. Their collapses and mergers also tell the story of how competitive and unforgiving the industry can be.

So if you remember any of these names, you saw a version of air travel that’s gone for good. The planes may have retired, but the memories of window seats and tiny wings pinned to a jacket haven’t.
