Researchers have identified a new species of tiny marsupial from specimens long stored in Australian museum collections. The animal, collected years earlier on the Arnhem Plateau, had been grouped with a known species until detailed genetic work revealed its distinct identity. This discovery underscores how museum holdings continue to yield fresh insights into Australia’s biodiversity.
Genetic Analysis Uncovers Hidden Diversity
Scientists reviewed more than 220 planigale specimens held in museums across the country. Many had been labeled as Planigale ingrami, a widespread species whose status had already come under question in earlier studies. The new examination combined physical measurements with DNA sequencing and showed that the material represented four separate species rather than one.
One of those four is the Arnhem Plateau planigale. Two others had been recognized previously, while a fourth had been described only recently from Western Australia. The work demonstrates that what once appeared to be a single variable species actually comprises several distinct lineages with limited ranges.
Distinct Traits of the Arnhem Plateau Planigale
The new species is the largest among the four newly distinguished forms. It features dark-gray fur and a notably long tail relative to its body size. Its scientific name, Planigale petrophila, refers to its apparent preference for rocky habitats on the sandstone plateau and slopes of the region.
All three known specimens were collected within a 12-kilometer radius in the Northern Territory. Two are males and one is female. The animals belong to the group of planigales, which rank among the world’s smallest marsupials, with some individuals weighing only a few grams and feeding on insects and other small prey.
Limited Records Raise Questions About Distribution
Only three specimens of the Arnhem Plateau planigale have ever been documented. No additional individuals have been recorded in the past two decades, leaving its current status and full geographic range uncertain. The known sites lie within or near Kakadu National Park, an area of rugged sandstone terrain.
Planigales occupy a range of habitats across Australia and New Guinea, yet many species remain poorly studied because of their small size and nocturnal habits. The latest findings suggest that further targeted surveys in remote rocky areas could locate additional populations or even more unrecognized forms.
Implications for Future Surveys
The confirmation of the new species adds to a growing list of Australian mammals described from existing collections rather than fresh field sightings. Such work highlights the scientific value of long-term museum preservation and the need for continued genetic study of small mammals whose distributions may be narrower than once assumed.
Additional fieldwork will be required to determine whether the Arnhem Plateau planigale persists in the wild and how its habitat requirements compare with those of related species. Until then, the three museum specimens remain the sole physical evidence of its existence.
