Smart Airport Habits Every Traveler Should Always Follow

Flying can be overwhelming, especially for those who don’t do it frequently. Long security lines, regular flight delays, and pricey airport food are enough to make anyone dread the airport. While some inconveniences are unavoidable, building a few smart habits can make the experience less stressful and, dare we say, more enjoyable.

We’ve rounded up habits that every traveler should follow, and they might even have you looking forward to jetting off on your next getaway.

Advance Check-In

If you’re not already utilizing advance check-in, you’re missing out on one of the easiest ways to save time at the airport. Most airlines allow passengers to check in between 24 and 48 hours before the scheduled flight via their mobile app. This will enable you to skip long lines at the check-in counter and jump right to security.

Arrive Early

Few things make a traveler’s heart race more than sprinting to their flight gate minutes before the doors of the cockpit close. Ensuring that you’re on time for your flight might be the most anxiety-inducing part of traveling, but it can be alleviated with some forward planning.

Plan to arrive at the airport between 1.5 and two hours before a domestic flight and between 2.5 and three hours ahead for international travel. This gives you enough time to relax before your flight rather than frantically racing through the airport.

Use TSA PreCheck/Global Entry

Another helpful resource that can reduce time spent at the airport is TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. These are Trusted Traveler Programs, primarily used by frequent flyers, that expedite the screening process before boarding a flight.

Enrolling in TSA PreCheck offers quicker security screening, while Global Entry provides faster customs processing for international travelers returning to the United States.

Pay Attention to the Announcements

While it’s advised to check the screens for gate changes and flight delays regularly, don’t rely on them to always have the most updated information. That’s when the announcements made over the intercom come in handy.

Listen closely to these announcements in case any boarding instructions or gate adjustments are revealed. Those will generally include the most up-to-date information, sometimes before it’s posted elsewhere.

Use Waiting Time Wisely

Instead of playing games on your phone for hours or napping before a long flight, take care of critical pre-flight tasks during this time. This could include charging devices, filling up your water bottle, or using the bathroom.

By checking these off beforehand, you can be prepared with all the necessities before boarding and, in turn, have a more comfortable flight.

Be Prepared

There’s a reason why TSA agents typically instruct passengers to have their passports, identification, and boarding passes available before reaching the front of the line. These procedures ensure that the line moves quickly and efficiently without any unnecessary delays.

Aside from this, passengers should also be prepared for security by removing electronics, liquids, and metal items from their bags. Additionally, wearing easily removable shoes can help speed up the process and spare you less time walking around barefoot.

Have Wipes or Sanitizer on Hand

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have adopted the habit of keeping wipes and sanitizer readily available. This is especially important when traveling, as airports are a breeding ground for germs with so many people coming and going.

By keeping these items in an accessible location, you can frequently wipe down seats, armrests, and trays before use, warding off germs and sickness.

Download Airline App

Airline apps are more than just check-in tools. Guests can also book flights through the app, access their boarding passes, and verify flight information straight from their mobile devices.

Additionally, some apps allow seat selection, flight changes, and in-flight entertainment purchases, making the process simple and requiring no assistance.

Take a Photo of Important Information

Poor internet connection or Wi-Fi issues can come at the worst times. To avoid experiencing these mishaps, take a photo of the necessary documentation, such as your boarding pass and rental car information, so you won’t have to scramble to find it online.

It’s also suggested to snap a picture of your luggage tag and parking spot to ensure you can locate each without issue once you land.

Use Luggage with a Bright Tag

Speaking of luggage tags, passengers are encouraged to use brightly colored tags so they can be easily spotted and distinguished from other luggage. Secure the tag to your checked bag and make sure your contact information is visible in case it gets lost.

Bring an Empty Water Bottle

TSA regulations prohibit liquids through security checkpoints, but empty water bottles are permitted. After passing through the checkpoint area, passengers can refill their bottles at the many hydration stations throughout the airport.

Many people take advantage of this to bypass the high cost of bottled water or other beverages at the airport vendors. This will also prevent you from having to search for a drink when you’re short on time.

Pack Snacks

Just like water, airport snacks can be costly and limited. Snacks such as crackers, chips, pretzels, and nuts are all great options to nibble on before and during the flight.

This not only saves money but it also satisfies hunger, especially when traveling with kids.

Fly Smarter

Airports don’t have to be a source of dread. With a bit of preparation, these simple habits can help make your travel day more efficient, and you’ll maybe even have a delightful experience.

Have a safe and great next flight!
