Southwest Airlines has outlined its most extensive summer schedule to date, with an 11-route expansion that reaches 15 cities and introduces new international options in the Caribbean and Central America. The Dallas-based carrier made the announcement last week, highlighting fresh connections from Austin, Nashville and San Diego that will operate during the peak travel window from June 3 through August 2, 2027. Travelers planning vacations or family trips next summer will gain more direct options to popular leisure destinations without relying on connections. ([1])
Key Routes and Service Details
The new and returning flights emphasize leisure markets, with nine of the routes representing service the airline has never operated before. Austin Bergstrom International Airport receives the largest share of additions, including weekend flights to Liberia in Costa Rica, Nassau in the Bahamas and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Additional Austin routes include daily seasonal service to Portland, Oregon, plus seasonal flights to Sarasota, Florida, Savannah, Georgia and Bozeman, Montana. Nashville International Airport gains three new routes to Boise, Idaho, Nassau and Providenciales in Turks and Caicos. San Diego International Airport adds a seasonal Sunday flight to Oklahoma City, while several existing routes from that airport receive extra frequencies. The carrier will also restore seasonal service from Nashville and San Diego to Bozeman, along with San Diego flights to Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.
Austin Emerges as the Primary Beneficiary
Austin stands out as the clearest winner in the expansion. Southwest expects to operate its largest schedule ever at Austin Bergstrom, with roughly 143 departures on peak summer days. The airport already faces growing competition from other carriers, yet Southwest continues to hold the dominant position there. Construction of the airline鈥檚 first lounge at the airport is underway, aligning with the increased flight activity. These additions give Austin travelers more direct access to Caribbean and Central American destinations that previously required connections. Weekend service patterns on several routes reflect the leisure focus of the summer schedule.
Nashville and San Diego See Targeted Growth
Nashville will see up to 220 daily flights next summer, supported by the three new island routes and additional domestic options. The airport is also receiving its first Southwest lounge, which should appeal to frequent flyers based in the region. San Diego gains incremental capacity on established routes plus the new link to Oklahoma City, strengthening its role as a western gateway for summer travel. The moves at both airports reflect Southwest鈥檚 strategy of reinforcing key leisure hubs while introducing new international reach from secondary cities.
Practical Implications for Travelers
The summer 2027 schedule gives passengers more flexibility when booking vacations to beach and mountain destinations. Routes to Costa Rica, the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos open new direct options from Texas and Tennessee markets that have seen rising demand for international leisure travel. Domestic additions such as Austin to Portland and Nashville to Boise provide seasonal alternatives for those seeking cooler climates or outdoor activities. Because the flights are concentrated between early June and early August, travelers should monitor booking windows closely to secure preferred dates and fares. The expansion underscores Southwest鈥檚 continued emphasis on point-to-point service at airports where it maintains strong market share.
