Travelers between Las Vegas and Honolulu will soon encounter one of the more unusual overnight schedules in U.S. aviation. Southwest Airlines will launch a westbound flight that departs in the middle of the night and arrives in Hawaii at the start of the following morning. The move expands options for passengers who already move regularly between the two destinations.
The Schedule and Time Shift
The flight departs Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport at 2:45 a.m. Pacific time. It covers the roughly six-hour-and-twenty-five-minute journey while crossing three time zones westward. Arrival at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport occurs at 6:10 a.m. local time. Passengers must reach the airport in the early morning hours, often after checking out of hotels late the previous evening. The early arrival in Hawaii leaves little time for immediate hotel check-in. Those who manage some rest during the flight gain an extra day of activity at their destination.
Why Southwest Added the Service
Strong existing demand between Hawaii and Las Vegas drove the decision. Many residents of the islands treat Las Vegas as an extension of home, a connection sometimes called the “ninth island.” Industry analyst Robert Mann noted the route serves a market with substantial origin-and-destination traffic. The schedule also improves aircraft utilization. An early arrival in Honolulu positions the plane for return flights later the same morning. Southwest sees the timing as a practical way to increase daily flying hours without adding new aircraft.
Other Airlines Already Fly Similar Routes
Hawaiian Airlines operates a comparable overnight service from Las Vegas. Its flight departs at 1:55 a.m. and reaches Honolulu around 5:15 a.m. local time, often using a larger Airbus A330. Spanish carrier Iberia runs an even longer westbound red-eye from Madrid to Dallas Fort Worth, departing at 12:55 a.m. and landing at 5:30 a.m. Most transcontinental and transatlantic flights still follow the more common eastbound overnight pattern. Southwest’s addition stands out because it reverses that direction on a domestic route.
Practical Steps for Passengers
Travelers can reduce fatigue with a few targeted preparations:
- Request late checkout at Las Vegas hotels when elite status allows.
- Book a day-use room in Honolulu for rest and a shower upon arrival.
- Check loyalty programs or credit-card perks that permit early check-in as early as noon.
Without status or special arrangements, some guests have secured rooms by 8 a.m., while others wait until afternoon. Planning ahead helps turn the early arrival into an advantage rather than a burden. The new timing gives frequent flyers between the two cities more flexibility at both ends of the trip. It also highlights how airlines continue to adjust schedules to match real passenger patterns rather than traditional flight norms.
