What happens when productivity is glorified and personal time slowly disappears? For many, the answer is revenge procrastination, staying up late to reclaim a sliver of the day for themselves.

A new survey by Amerisleep.com reveals that 56 percent of people report not having enough personal time during the day. To make up for it, they stay up late, even when they are completely worn out. This growing trend, known as revenge bedtime procrastination, is particularly prevalent among younger generations. Nearly 60 percent of Gen Z and millennials admit to sacrificing sleep to carve out a sense of control in their lives.

While it may feel empowering in the moment, staying up late scrolling through social media is taking a toll on your well-being. On average, Americans are getting only seven hours of sleep on weeknights, which is below the recommended minimum of eight hours of sleep. It is not just jobs or parenting that are eating into the rest. Half of all respondents report being glued to their phones in bed, with TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram identified as the top distractions at bedtime.

We Are Swapping Real Experiences for Secondhand Ones

Revenge bedtime procrastination is more than a cute trend. It is quietly sabotaging our sleep, our mood, and our ability to enjoy life. According to the survey, people who sleep fewer than six hours a night are 41 percent more likely to report feeling burned out. And yet, many continue this habit night after night, choosing content over rest.

Rosie Osmun, a Certified Sleep Science Coach at Amerisleep, explains that people are not staying up late because they enjoy being tired. They do it because it is the only time they feel like themselves. “But night after night,” Osmun says, “that choice can quietly unravel their well-being.”

But what if there were a better way to reclaim your personal time—one that did not require giving up sleep or doomscrolling through someone else’s life?

Take Your “Me Time” on the Road

Here at Travelbinger, we believe that the answer is simple. Instead of staying up late to feel alive, go live. Get outside. Go camping. Take a spontaneous road trip. Step away from the screen and toward real-world experiences.

Gabrielle Schmauderer, automotive journalist and social media personality at Guessing Headlights, offers a timely reminder: “It is imperative, for your own mental clarity, to put the phone down and go outside. Go on a road trip. Stop watching other people’s memories on Instagram and make your own.”

She is right. Swapping late-night scrolling for real-life adventure is one of the healthiest decisions you can make. Whether you drive to a nearby state park, plan a weekend getaway, or spend a morning watching the sunrise instead of your feed, those small choices can restore your sense of self in a far more lasting way.

Tips for Taking Back Your Time, Without Losing Sleep

Here are a few ways to break free from revenge bedtime procrastination and turn your time into something truly restorative:

  • Set a wind-down alarm to remind yourself when it is time to unplug.
  • Replace bedtime scrolling with a short walk after dinner or a few quiet minutes reading something offline.
  • Make mornings meaningful. Take your coffee outside. Listen to the birds. Ease into the day.
  • Use blue light filters or night mode if you must look at screens before bed.
  • Track your sleep habits so you know when you are slipping into late-night territory again.
  • Plan microadventures. Give yourself something to look forward to that is not tied to your phone.

Choose Experience Over Escape

We all crave autonomy, creativity, and peace. Instead of stealing time from your sleep to scroll through someone else’s story, choose to write your own. Whether that means a weekend road trip or a spontaneous detour to a roadside diner, the moments you create outside your phone are the ones that stick.

Your body needs sleep. Your soul needs adventure. You do not need to lose one to gain the other.
