That is not a gradual trend line, it is a sharp jump in a single year.
Much of the growth traces back to accessible visa routes. Portugal offers some of the most attainable residency visas in the EU, such as the D7, Digital Nomad Visa, and Golden Visa. On top of that, the Portuguese healthcare system is recognized for its quality and affordability, allowing residents to access necessary medical care without the financial burdens often found elsewhere. Combine that with a Mediterranean climate and a lower cost of living than most of Western Europe, and the appeal becomes obvious.
Spain
Spain sits just behind Portugal in most rankings of where Americans actually want to go, and the reasons overlap in some ways while diverging in others. In a survey of Americans considering relocation, Spain ranked second only to Portugal in both stated interest and algorithmic recommendation, ahead of the UK, Canada, Italy, and Ireland. As of a few years ago, Spain was already among the top countries holding residence permits issued to US nationals, alongside Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Portugal.
What draws people specifically to Spain tends to be less about visa mechanics and more about daily life. Spain remains a magnet for those moving from the US, Mexico, and Latin America alike, thanks to its rich history, diverse regions, and strong social connections, with expats often citing friendly locals and a robust healthcare system as key attractions. The country also offers a wide range of settings, from Barcelona’s urban energy to smaller coastal towns where the pace slows down considerably.
Canada
Canada has an advantage most other countries on this list cannot match: it is right next door, and the culture gap feels smaller. Canada ranked as the number one country Americans hope to move to in 2026, with nearly a quarter of survey respondents choosing it as their top relocation pick. That is a meaningful lead over the next closest contenders.
Part of the pull is purely practical. For many Americans, Canada offers a balance of familiarity and fresh opportunity, with shared language, cultural similarities, and geographic closeness making the transition smoother than relocating across the globe. On the immigration side, Americans do need a visa to move to Canada permanently, and the main pathway is Express Entry, a points-based system for skilled workers with processing times of six months or less, where US applicants often perform well due to English proficiency, education, and work experience.
Ireland
Ireland’s rise has been sudden rather than gradual, and it is largely tied to ancestry-based citizenship. Ireland has seen a 96% surge in 2025, with 40,000 Americans securing Irish passports. That is a striking number for a country of just over five million people.
Beyond passports, actual arrivals have also picked up sharply. Ireland welcomed 10,000 Americans in 2025, double the previous year, making it the fastest-growing English-speaking destination. The combination of a shared language, EU membership, and a straightforward path to citizenship through Irish grandparents or great-grandparents has made Ireland an unusually easy sell for Americans with even a distant family link to the country.
Panama
Panama has quietly become one of the most attractive options in Latin America for Americans looking to relocate rather than simply retire. The country’s Friendly Nations Visa and relatively low cost of living have helped build a sizable international community, with estimates suggesting 25,000 to 30,000 Americans now living there, particularly in Panama City and the mountain town of Boquete. That community has grown steadily rather than exploded overnight, which suggests staying power rather than a passing trend.
For retirees specifically, the math is especially favorable. Panama runs on a dollar economy, imposes no foreign income tax, and offers senior discounts, making it purpose-built for retirees alongside countries like Ecuador and the Philippines. That financial simplicity, paired with a tropical climate and relatively short flights back to the US, keeps drawing new arrivals every year.
What This Shift Actually Reflects
None of these six countries pulled ahead by accident. Each one solves a different problem, whether that is cost, healthcare, visa access, or simple geographic convenience, and Americans appear to be sorting themselves accordingly based on what matters most to their own situation. Mexico and Panama offer proximity and affordability, Portugal and Spain offer European quality of life at a discount, while Canada and Ireland offer a softer cultural landing for those unwilling to stray too far from familiar language and customs.
What ties the trend together is less about any single country and more about a broader recalculation happening among American households weighing housing costs, healthcare access, and daily quality of life against what is available elsewhere. Whether this pattern continues to build or eventually levels off will depend on economic and political conditions that are still very much in motion, but for now, these six destinations remain the clearest evidence of where that recalculation is leading people.
