Many U.S. travelers hold IHG credit cards that deliver annual free night certificates as a core benefit. These certificates often offset the cards’ annual fees when used at properties within their points value limits. Cardholders can also earn extra certificates through targeted spending in some cases, and recent changes have raised the redemption caps for new issuances.
Earning Certificates Through Credit Cards
The primary path to these certificates runs through three current U.S.-issued IHG One Rewards cards. Each provides an anniversary certificate automatically on the cardmember’s renewal date. The IHG One Rewards Premier Select Credit Card carries a $350 fee and awards a certificate worth up to 60,000 points, with an additional certificate available after $40,000 in annual spending. The IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card, at a $150 fee, supplies a certificate capped at 50,000 points without a spending bonus. The IHG One Rewards Business Credit Card, priced at $200, also offers a 50,000-point certificate and an extra one after $60,000 spent. Existing cardholders who opened accounts before the recent portfolio update continue to receive certificates limited to 40,000 points through the end of 2026. Starting in 2027, those same accounts shift to the higher caps. Certificates earned via spending typically appear in accounts within eight weeks of qualification. Cardholders may add points from their IHG balance to cover stays above the certificate limit when the certificate permits top-offs.
Viewing Certificate Details and Windows
Cardholders check available certificates by logging into their IHG One Rewards account and selecting their name in the upper right. Scrolling reveals the “Enjoy your rewards” section, where a free nights panel lists any unredeemed certificates. Selecting “Book a Free Night” displays each certificate’s booking and stay windows, maximum points value, and top-off eligibility. Certificates generally must be booked and used within 12 months of issuance. Staying outside that window voids the benefit. This timeline encourages prompt planning, especially for travelers whose travel dates fall near the end of a certificate year.
Booking Stays and Adding Points
Redemption begins on the same rewards page by selecting the blue “Book Free Night” button next to a certificate. The system automatically applies the certificate rate during search. Travelers can also reach the booking flow from the main landing page after login by choosing the certificate rate option and entering dates. Results show properties where the certificate covers the room and taxes, though resort or amenity fees may still apply at some locations. When a certificate allows top-offs, higher-priced nights appear with an option to add points for the difference. Properties outside the certificate’s value simply display paid rates instead. Separate reservations are required for multi-night stays because the system does not combine certificate and points or cash nights on one booking. The program’s fourth-night-free award does not apply to certificate redemptions.
Putting Certificates to Best Use
Comparing cash rates against points requirements at target properties helps identify strong redemptions. Even modest stays deliver value when a certificate would otherwise expire unused. The higher caps now available on newer cards expand options at more premium properties, provided cardholders plan around the 12-month window and any top-off needs. Cardmembers who track their certificates and spending thresholds can extract consistent returns from these perks year after year.
